Joshua Zukas, an American reporter who specializes in writing about Vietnam tourism, said that Michelin has missed many delicious dishes in Hanoi such as fish noodle soup or mixed chicken pho.
With more than 10 years of experience specializing in researching Vietnamese tourism and cuisine and frequently visiting Hanoi, Joshua Zukas introduces on Insider 5 delicious street restaurants in the capital that deserve to be named by Michelin.
Sam Cay Si Fish Noodle Soup
Address: Trung Yen Alley, Hoan Kiem

Located in Trung Yen Alley, Hoan Kiem District, Sam Cay Si fish noodle is a restaurant that many domestic and foreign diners visit in the Old Quarter. The alley where the restaurant is located is also a famous dining area in Hanoi with many dishes such as eel vermicelli, pho, and duck vermicelli. This fish noodle restaurant has been open for more than 20 years, attracting domestic and foreign diners.

The restaurant is famous for its fish rolls with meat, prepared by the owner, Mrs. Sam, according to a special recipe learned from Hue. For the vermicelli and glass noodles, the main ingredient is crispy fried perch, served with dill, green onions and herbs. The broth has a light sour taste because it is simmered from fish bones, cooked with a mixture of pineapple and tomatoes. The restaurant also has mixed dishes.

This restaurant used to be a sidewalk restaurant, but has now moved into a small house in the Old Quarter. Joshua Zukas shared that he was impressed with the restaurant space, which is arranged in a room that is both a bedroom, a worship room, and a living room of the restaurant owner's family. This gives him a clearer view of the lives of people in Hanoi's Old Quarter.

Regarding the pho restaurant, the American male tourist commented that the taste here is typical of Northern pho with rich broth. The accompanying spices at the restaurant are carefully prepared, pickled garlic and chili sauce are homemade, eaten with pho to help the broth become more flavorful.
Ho Tay Hot Rice Rolls

Hot rice rolls are also an indispensable dish on the map of Hanoi's typical delicacies. Joshua Zukas introduces the 40-year-old Ho Tay hot rice rolls restaurant, which "deserves" to be on the Michelin list. The restaurant serves hot steamed rice rolls with pork and wood ear mushrooms. Diners can order additional egg rice rolls, served with cinnamon sausage.
The American male tourist said that what was more interesting than enjoying this dish was watching the chef pour rice flour into the steamer and then "swiftly" roll each cake evenly.
Joshua Zukas suggests that after breakfast here, diners can visit the traditional coffee shop at 43 Yen Phu, which has existed for nearly a century.
Pho Hanh

According to Joshua Zukas, many foreign tourists when mentioning Vietnamese pho often only know about beef pho. While pho is actually divided into many types, including chicken pho. The famous chicken pho in Hanoi was not mentioned in the Michelin list last June.

An American male tourist introduced Hanh chicken pho restaurant located near the corner of Thuoc Bac and Lan Ong streets. This restaurant is famous for its mixed chicken pho. The pho is boiled until soft, using noodles similar to beef pho. The accompanying ingredients are shredded chicken, green onions, herbs, peanuts, served with sweet and sour sauce.

Duck vermicelli and glass noodles are also attractive to American male tourists when they come to Hanoi. Joshua Zukas commented that this dish has a rich, spicy broth that covers the unpleasant smell of duck meat. There are two ways to eat it: with hot broth or mixed with dry sauce.
Thanh Ngan Restaurant, recommended by Joshua Zukas, has an interesting space as it is located near the train tracks. The male tourist suggested that those who cannot go to the train street can choose to come to this restaurant to have the experience of eating street food while watching the train run. Diners can visit the restaurant during the train running times of 7pm, 7:45pm and 8:30pm every day.
