Once a crop that contributed to hunger eradication and poverty reduction for people in the province, in recent years, the economic value of sugarcane has tended to decline, partly due to low productivity and quality of sugarcane. Faced with this situation, sugarcane enterprises, local authorities and people have come up with solutions to sustainably develop sugarcane raw material areas. In particular, focusing on promoting the role of agricultural cooperatives in organizing production and transferring science and technology to build intensive sugarcane growing areas with high productivity, quality and efficiency.
People in Thach Quang commune (Thach Thanh) take care of sugarcane.
Thach Quang is one of the leading localities in implementing joint ventures and associations in agricultural production in Thach Thanh district. Since 2012, the commune has established a model of association between enterprises through cooperatives and farmers associated with cooperatives to consume agricultural products. In which, the product with a large proportion is raw sugarcane.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Quan, Director of Thach Quang Agricultural Business Service Cooperative (Thach Thanh), said: "For many years, local people have grown raw sugarcane to develop the economy. The Cooperative signed a contract with Vietnam - Taiwan Sugarcane Company Limited to purchase raw sugarcane for local people. To strengthen the link between enterprises, people and the Cooperative, before the production season, the Cooperative coordinates with enterprises to select sugarcane varieties with high productivity and good quality, suitable for local soil. At the same time, it organizes training and improves the production level of local people, such as: applying synchronous mechanization and intensive farming techniques to production, contributing to improving the productivity and quality of raw sugarcane. At harvest time, the Cooperative plays a key role in negotiating purchase contracts, prices, transportation, preservation... ensuring the highest benefits for the people".
It is known that thanks to the mechanized production process, advanced science and technology and effective harvesting and processing, the productivity and quality of local raw sugarcane have increased. If before 2014, the sugarcane yield was only 65 tons/ha, then from 2015 to now, the yield has reached 70 to 80 tons/ha, there are sugarcane fields that apply intensive farming methods, install surface irrigation systems, the yield can reach 100 to 110 tons/ha. Therefore, the economic efficiency brought to the people is relatively stable.
Since the 2018-2019 crop year, when Lam Son Sugarcane High-Tech Agriculture Company Limited restructured the sugarcane production area, Tho Thanh Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative (Thuong Xuan) has played a bridging role to organize and build a raw sugarcane area. Accordingly, the Cooperative has coordinated with the seed supply company, guided compliance with the seasonal plan, cultivation techniques and care regimes, and applied the latest technologies in large-scale sugarcane production. Accordingly, every year, the Cooperative maintains a raw sugarcane area of more than 100 hectares/crop year, of which more than 50 hectares of sugarcane use intensive farming methods.
Right from the beginning of each crop year, Tho Thanh Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative has effectively implemented service stages such as: land preparation, application of scientific and technological advances in agricultural production. In addition, the Cooperative has also guided sugarcane growers in selecting high-yield sugarcane varieties and new scientific and technical measures in production. In the 2024-2025 crop year, the locality strives to reach 120 hectares of intensive sugarcane cultivation area, with an average yield of about 90-100 tons/ha, an increase of more than 30 tons/ha compared to traditional production. Mr. Le Huu Giang, Chairman of Tho Thanh Commune People's Committee, said: "The cooperative's responsibility for production in the raw sugarcane area has created favorable conditions for guiding people in caring for and transferring technical advances in agriculture. Regarding the production process, the cooperative is responsible for connecting with enterprises to import quality seeds and materials and applying synchronous mechanization. At the same time, organizing the signing of contracts, purchasing, transporting and consuming sugarcane to ensure the most appropriate benefits for each cooperative member".
In the 2024-2025 crop year, Thanh Hoa province strives to plant about 16,000 hectares of raw sugarcane. Up to now, localities have newly planted and preserved more than 14,400 hectares. In order to develop sustainable sugarcane raw material areas, agricultural cooperatives have proactively selected high-quality varieties such as KK3 and LK92-11 to organize large-scale production. At the same time, they have proactively researched mechanisms and policies to support agricultural development to advise authorities at all levels to support people in investing and developing production in a modern direction. Along with that, sugarcane cooperatives are gradually promoting the application of technology in intensive farming, such as: deep plowing and lime application, building surface irrigation systems, and having a balanced fertilization regime to ensure that raw sugarcane grows well and is free of pests and diseases.
