Last October, Hai My (born in 1993, from Lang Son, currently living in Hanoi) got married. Tet 2025 is also the first Tet she has to worry about her small family's expenses by herself.
For new brides, the first Tet at their husband's house is an opportunity to "score points" in the eyes of their parents and relatives.
However, celebrating Tet at the husband's house for the first time always makes new brides feel confused and worried.
Although she realizes that she is not good at managing a house, because she does business, she is considered by many people to be skillful, calculating and spending money. However, Hai My's first Tet as a daughter-in-law still took place in confusion, making her hesitate more when Tet 2025 is approaching.
"I still remember clearly, last year's Tet, I set aside 50 million VND for spending. At first, I told my husband that 50 million VND to spend during Tet was definitely generous, so all of my husband's income before Tet and his bonus went straight into his savings account. Who would have thought that on the 30th of Tet, he would be eager to spend more money," Hai My said.
Growing up in a middle-class family, Hai My never had to worry about spending money on Tet, especially when it came to gifts. In fact, this is true for almost everyone, we only really have to worry about it until we have our own family.
"My husband's family is quite well-off, so it's not good to give too little to his parents. And I'm not sure how much is enough to make me feel comfortable giving lucky money to relatives," Hai My said. She initially planned to give both families only 30 million VND as gifts. However, the number came up right after discussing it with her husband.
The new bride spent 50 million VND to spend on Tet but it was still not enough!
According to Hai My's initial calculation, out of that 50 million, she will give each parent 10 million to buy Tet gifts, totaling 20 million VND.
The remaining 30 million is divided into the following amounts: 10 million VND for lucky money for parents/relatives/children of friends and 20 million VND for food/clothes and expenses for the Lunar New Year for the couple.
However, when sharing with her husband, Hai My immediately realized that this number was not enough. My husband said that before getting married, his family had a tradition of children giving their parents 10 million each Tet holiday. So, after getting married, My husband wanted to give his parents more because his income has not decreased, and is even higher than before.
"My husband wants to give each parent 15 million VND, and also needs a Tet gift basket to burn incense for the ancestors. So we need at least 16 - 17 million VND, 1.5 times more than our estimated cost," Hai My said.
Regarding the remaining expenses such as lucky money or Tet expenses for the couple, Hai My said her husband does not interfere, so she can calculate them herself.
"My husband is a family-oriented person, so I understand and completely agree that he wants to show his gratitude to his parents. However, the amount of money spent during Tet makes me quite panic," Hai My shared.
In addition to the above amount, shopping for food and worship during Lunar New Year has also increased much more than Ms. Hai My expected.

"During Tet, everything increases, if you spend 5 million on Tet shopping, it will be gone in a flash. Due to the nature of my job and my personality of liking to communicate and hang out with many friends, my family often receives a lot of guests during Tet.
"Food is very expensive, and besides candy, most things cannot be bought too far in advance to stock up," Hai My said, adding that she feels very worried about the cost of buying food during Tet this year, when the economy is in recession and many items are likely to increase in price.
Sharing more, Hai My said that in total for last year's Tet, she and her husband spent 62 million VND. Specifically:
- 30 million VND as gifts for both sets of parents before Tet, plus 2 gift baskets worth 1 million VND each. Total is 32 million VND.
- Lucky money for relatives, children and friends is 10 million VND.
- Money to buy food and groceries for Tet is 10 million VND.
- Shopping and other expenses for the couple is 10 million VND.
Up to now, Hai My said she has not yet planned for this year's Tet spending. However, Hai My shared that the amount certainly cannot be too different because those are all expenses and she has also calculated carefully, for sure.
