Detecting malignancy from a swelling in the head area

Báo Nhân dânBáo Nhân dân05/03/2025

NDO - A baby boy had a mass in his head about 1.5cm in size, although it was painless and showed no suspicious signs, when examined at a medical facility, the doctor discovered that the patient had a rare malignant disease.

NMT (11 years old, in Hanoi) was taken by his family to a hospital in Hanoi for examination due to a mass appearing in the head area.

The family said that in October 2024, the child felt a mass in the head area about 1.5cm in size, painless, and without other suspicious signs.

At this time, examining the temporo-parietal region, a mass about 2x1cm in size was palpable, slightly firm to the touch, and not painful. Ultrasound recorded a mixed echogenic lesion, with clear boundaries, measuring 16mmx7mm.

Blood test results were all within normal limits. Doctors made a diagnosis of benign fibrolipoma not excluded from hematoma so no intervention was done.

After 2 months of monitoring the size gradually increased, the child was re-examined and indicated for surgery to remove the entire tumor for diagnosis. After surgery to remove the entire lesion, the specimen was sent to Medlatec Pathology Center for diagnosis.

At Medlatec, the specimens are subjected to specialized tests such as Histopathology and Immunohistochemistry with modern, high-tech machinery. Then, experts at Medlatec Pathology Center analyze and give a conclusion consistent with Myeloid Sarcoma.

Faced with the diagnosis of Myeloid Sarcoma, the family was very confused and decided to send the sample for consultation at leading specialized hospitals such as K Hospital and the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion.

Here, the Pathology experts also agreed and concluded as at Medlatec that the histopathological and immunohistochemical images were consistent with Myeloid Sarcoma. The patient was then transferred to the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion for treatment.

According to doctors, Myeloid Sarcoma (also known as Myeloid Sarcoma) is a rare disease involving the formation of tumors from promyelocytes, or myeloid cells. This is a form of blood cancer in which myeloid cancer cells (cells that form red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in the bone marrow) develop into tumors outside the bone marrow, which can appear in soft tissues or organs other than the bone marrow.

Myeloid sarcoma is characterized by the presence of immature myeloid cells, which may be granulocytes, promyelocytes, or other immature granulocytes.

When myeloid sarcoma is not detected and treated promptly, it can develop in many different organs and tissues such as the skin, lymph nodes, liver, spleen, soft tissue, bones and surrounding tissues. The spread of Myeloid Sarcoma to other organs in the body such as the liver, spleen, bones, or even the brain makes treatment more difficult.

Experts from Medlatec Healthcare System note that the symptoms of Myeloid Sarcoma depend on the location of the tumor with common signs such as pain, swelling in the area of the tumor; feeling tired, weight loss; infection due to leukopenia; easy bleeding or bruising.

However, these signs can be a manifestation of other diseases. Therefore, if one of these unusual signs appears, people should go to a reputable, quality medical facility for examination, accurate diagnosis and timely treatment.

According to Master, resident physician Truong Quoc Thanh, Deputy Director of Medlatec Pathology Center, Myeloid Sarcoma is often diagnosed through methods such as: X-ray, MRI, or CT scan to determine the location and size of the tumor; histopathological testing, in which cancer cells are identified through biopsy or surgical specimens; immunohistochemistry testing when abnormal cells are found.

In cases diagnosed with Myeloid Sarcoma, depending on the severity, the patient will be prescribed treatment with one of the following methods: chemotherapy, radiotherapy, bone marrow transplant (or stem cell transplant).
