In a blog post on OpenAI, the company said it has just released its first AI model capable of reasoning. The new Open o1 model is designed to spend more time computing answers before responding to user queries. With this model, OpenAI's tools will be able to solve multi-step problems, including complex math and coding.
While the new AI model doesn’t yet have many of the features that make ChatGPT useful, such as browsing the web for information and uploading files and images, it’s a significant advance for complex inference tasks and represents a new level of AI capability. OpenAI says it’s resetting the counter to 1 and calling it OpenAI o1.
This model is currently available via ChatGPT, for Plus users and paid teams.
The new AI model comes amid growing competition in the race to develop ever more sophisticated artificial intelligence systems. In addition to OpenAI, Anthropic and Google have also touted reasoning skills with their advanced AI models.
The experience of using OpenAI’s updated AI system will be a little different than what users might expect. Before responding to a user prompt, the new software will pause for a few seconds. It will then consider a number of related prompts and summarize what it thinks is the best response. This will help o1 provide more accurate and insightful answers.
The company reportedly trained a model by rewarding it for each correct step in the process of arriving at an answer to a problem, rather than simply rewarding it for generating a correct answer.
