President Zelenskyy confirmed the call, in which he congratulated Mr Trump on officially becoming the Republican presidential candidate, as well as wishing the 78-year-old politician well following the assassination attempt a week ago.
“We agreed with President Trump to discuss in a private meeting the steps that could bring about a just and truly lasting peace,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X.
Mr Trump has repeatedly vowed to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict quickly, but has not given details on how to do so.
Speaking at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on July 18, Mr Trump vowed to end ongoing international crises, saying he could "stop wars with just one phone call".
“I will end every international crisis that this administration has created, including the terrible conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” Mr Trump said, without specifying how he would do so.
Earlier this week, Mr Zelenskyy said he and Mr Trump would “work together” if Republicans defeated Democrats.
The US has provided tens of billions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine since February 2022. However, questions have been raised about continued US support if Mr. Trump returns to the White House.
Mr Trump's running mate is Mr JD Vance, leader of the isolationist wing of the Republican Party in Congress, who argues that the US should cut aid to Ukraine.
