A French lawmaker in the European Parliament has called on the United States to return the Statue of Liberty, saying Washington no longer represents the values that prompted Paris to donate the statue.
"Give us back the Statue of Liberty," politician Raphael Glucksmann said at a party conference on Place Publique on March 16.
"We gave it to you as a gift, but obviously you didn't like it. So the statue will be fine when it returns home," he added.

US officials have not yet responded to Mr. Raphael Glucksmann's statement.
The Statue of Liberty was inaugurated in New York City harbor on October 28, 1886, as a gift from the people of France to the United States on the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The statue is 46 meters tall, wears a crown with 7 spikes, holds a stone tablet engraved with the date of American independence in Roman numerals and has a broken chain on its left leg. The statue was designed by French architect Auguste Bartholdi.
According to AFP, Mr. Glucksmann's comments may be related to the decision of the US President Donald Trump's administration to suspend aid to Ukraine. Mr. Glucksmann has a pro-Ukrainian stance and has strongly criticized President Trump when the US recently changed its policy regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Glucksmann also criticized President Trump for cutting staff at research institutes in the US, adding that France would welcome them. After taking office in January, Trump slashed research budgets and considered laying off hundreds of federal workers in charge of health and climate research.
