According to VNA, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Mr. Dmitry Medvedev, declared that Moscow will not negotiate with Ukraine after Kiev's attack on the Kursk region, until the enemy is completely defeated.

“The empty talk about a wonderful peace by unauthorized mediators is over. Now everyone understands, even if no one says it, that there will be no more negotiations until the enemy is completely defeated,” Medvedev wrote in a Telegram post on August 21, TASS news agency reported.

In his view, the risk, albeit theoretical, that Russia will be stuck in negotiations at some point has become clear. Mr. Medvedev said he was referring to the hasty and unnecessary peace talks proposed by the international community and imposed on Kiev. The deputy head of the Russian Security Council also questioned the prospects of these negotiations or the results they could bring.

On August 20, the Russian military said it had stopped Ukrainian attacks on settlements in Kursk province and taken control of what it described as the strategic New York logistics center in eastern Ukraine.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that reconnaissance and search operations continued to identify and destroy what Moscow called “sabotage groups” trying to penetrate deep into Russian territory. In addition, Russian warplanes also attacked areas where Ukrainian personnel and equipment were concentrated on the Ukrainian side of the border.

Meanwhile, on the same day, speaking on national television, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces – Oleksandr Syrskyi said that the country’s army had advanced 28 to 35 kilometers into Russia’s Kursk province. However, on the same day, President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the “difficult” situation on Ukraine’s eastern frontline, near the strategic logistics center of Pokrovsk, and also near the Toretsk region.

Ukraine launched an offensive operation in Russia’s Kursk province on August 6. President Zelensky said the military operation was aimed at establishing a buffer zone to protect Ukraine’s territory. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that he would “respond adequately” to Ukraine’s attack on the Russian border, and declared that there would be no peace talks after Kiev’s new moves.
