THE RIGHT PERSON
The V-League playground has its own harshness. The pride of the veterans will not easily let a brand new team win the championship. The history of the V-League records that only Mr. Duc's HAGL Club with the legendary "Dream Team" won the championship right after being promoted in 2003. After exactly 20 years, the Hanoi Police Club (CAHN) repeated that seemingly impossible feat.
Coach Gong Oh-kyun was very successful with U.23 Vietnam.
In fact, CAHN Club building the number 1 "galaxy" in Vietnam after more than one season is considered a miracle. With people constantly innovating, it will take time to form a clear playing style. But for an ambitious team like CAHN Club, more than a year is too long. Coach Tran Tien Dai himself, after HAGL's 3-0 victory at Pleiku Stadium, also admitted that CAHN Club was lucky to win the 2023 V-League. This shows that this club has not yet formed the desired playing style, and the club's leadership wants a more convincing championship this season.

In the current situation, Coach Gong Oh-kyun is considered the right person thanks to his certain knowledge of Vietnamese football culture, after a period of time as an assistant and then head coach of the U.23 Vietnam team. In addition, he has demonstrated his ability to create good psychology, breathing life into the attacking style and strong, confident high-level pressing. His U.23 Vietnam team brings together many names that were not present at the 31st SEA Games such as Thanh Nhan, Tien Long, Duy Cuong, Danh Trung, Minh Binh... but played very well and reached the quarter-finals of the 2022 U.23 Asia. In particular, Mr. Gong discovered many young talents such as Van Khang, Van Truong (then only 19 years old), or helped Minh Binh, Thanh Nhan, Van Tung, Danh Trung... maximize their potential and play explosively. The team considered "A plus" drew with South Korea (1-1) and Thailand (2-2), defeated Malaysia 3-0 and only stopped at Saudi Arabia (the team that later won the tournament).
CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES
Just one tournament with the U.23 Vietnam team is probably not enough to confirm 100% that Mr. Gong Oh-kyun will be successful with a team like CAHN Club. But on the contrary, giving trust to Mr. Gong is a brave decision of the police team leader, showing the vision and determination to pursue beautiful, liberal football towards fans. After leaving the U.23 Vietnam team, Mr. Gong spent time completing the FIFA Pro certificate - FIFA's highest coaching degree. That was the time when this coach absorbed a lot of useful knowledge in Europe, leagues like Bundesliga are famous for playing scientifically but with the world's leading attacking and dedicated style. Leading CAHN Club with a star squad of the Vietnam team such as Quang Hai, Tan Tai, Van Thanh, Viet Anh, Van Hau, Filip Nguyen, Van Cuong, Tuan Duong... will be a challenge but also an opportunity for Mr. Gong to demonstrate his talent and accumulated capital.
Work from round 4
Mr. Gong Oh-kyun is temporarily back in Korea and will return to Vietnam with two assistants on November 3. He will take advantage of the waiting time (Mr. Tran Tien Dai will lead CAHN Club in round 3, before becoming CEO) to get acquainted with the Vietnamese assistants and new students. CAHN Club leaders also calculate to create conditions for Mr. Gong to have 1 month to prepare before his debut in round 4 of V-League 2023 - 2024 at Lach Tray Stadium of Hai Phong Club on December 4. Not counting the trio of foreign players Jeferson, Geovane, Junior Janio who work every day, the group of Vietnamese players, if they focus on playing the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, will still have nearly 20 days to work with the new coach. That amount of time must be considered enough for Mr. Gong to shape the proactive attacking style, pressing at a new level and being open as required by the club leaders.
