In the program "CEO 100 Tea Connect" within the framework of Ho Chi Minh City Economic Forum (HEF) 2023, business representatives gave valuable suggestions to the city government.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai Thanh, Chairwoman and General Director of REE Refrigeration Electrical Engineering Corporation (REE), said that environmental pollution is posing a great threat to the health of Ho Chi Minh City residents. Water pollution and air pollution are causing people's healthcare costs to increase. Disposable packaging is everywhere, and waste can be seen everywhere.
The city’s roads are increasingly narrow due to poor planning in the past. This has forced the city to spend a lot of money to “demolish and rebuild”, which is a huge flaw in the planning process.

Ms. Thanh believes that if Ho Chi Minh City had better planning and a longer-term vision (about 50 years), the city would not have to face the difficulties of land clearance as it does now. When transportation and infrastructure develop, the city will have a faster economic growth rate.
According to Ms. Thanh, environmental pollution and unsystematic planning are “holding back” the city’s development. To develop sustainably, the city must reduce emissions and use natural resources and energy efficiently. The city also needs to adopt a circular economy model, classify, recycle and reduce the use of non-biodegradable packaging.
Ms. Thanh shared that her company also participates in the production of renewable energy such as solar power, wind power and invests in clean water treatment and waste treatment for the city. However, the company's project of a waste treatment plant with a capacity of 2,000 tons/day had to wait 18 months to determine the location for the project implementation, which was too time-consuming.
“ We also see that Ho Chi Minh City has many office buildings and schools managed by the city government. These locations need to be covered by rooftop solar power systems. This clean energy source will be used by government agencies. We are willing to invest in these systems for the city and sell electricity at the price of electricity,” said Ms. Thanh.
According to Ms. Thanh, REE can also invest in drinking water systems for all schools in the city to reduce the use of plastic bottles and plastic containers. These are the shares and companionship of the enterprise with the city government.

In response to Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai Thanh’s heartfelt opinion, Mr. Phan Van Mai, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, thanked and acknowledged this valuable opinion. Mr. Mai said that the city government is making efforts to improve the living environment for the people.
Specifically, for wastewater treatment, the city will try to collect and treat about 60-70% of wastewater by the end of 2025. By 2027-2028, the city will try to collect and treat 100% of wastewater discharged into the environment.
As for waste treatment, this is an extremely difficult problem for the city. Because currently, landfill technology is still the main technology in the city, while advanced waste treatment technology accounts for only more than 10%. However, the city will only maintain landfill technology until 2025.
By 2026, the city will treat waste with advanced technology such as waste incineration to generate electricity or even reprocess the buried waste with modern technology. The city will have waste treatment plants with a capacity of 12,000 tons of waste per day. These plants will apply waste incineration to generate electricity.
“ We are also having urban beautification programs, renovating the city’s canal system such as Tham Luong – Ben Cat canal, Xuyen Tam canal, Doi canal – Te canal… ”, Mr. Mai said.

According to Mr. Mai, the city government’s specific actions in waste, wastewater, and exhaust gas treatment are also contributing to improving and enhancing the quality of life for people every day. The city government hopes that businesses and people will share and accompany the city’s efforts.
