Nvidia surpasses 'giants' Amazon and Google
According to Forbes, Nvidia's market value surpassed "giants" like Amazon and Alphabet earlier this week.
It was an unlikely victory, but it came as Nvidia's stock more than quadrupled over the past 15 months.
Specifically, Nvidia shares rose nearly 3% to an all-time high of more than $740, raising its market capitalization to $1.83 trillion, surpassing Alphabet's $1.82 trillion and Amazon's $1.8 trillion, marking Nvidia's impressive journey as Wall Street rushed to buy stocks amid the AI craze.
Nvidia is by far the most prominent maker of AI semiconductor technology, not only because of Nvidia's potential to capitalize on growing interest and enterprise spending in AI, but also because of its explosive results.
Nvidia will report its fourth-quarter 2023 results next week, with analysts predicting another quarter of record revenue and profit.
New York sues TikTok, Facebook, YouTube
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said on February 14 that his administration has filed a lawsuit against the parent companies of TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and YouTube, alleging that their services are harming the mental health of young people and children here.
The lawsuit alleges that Meta, Snap, ByteDance, and Google knowingly “designed, developed, manufactured, operated, promoted, distributed, and marketed their platforms to attract and addict teens, with minimal parental supervision.”
The plaintiffs allege the tech companies violated several city laws related to public nuisance and gross negligence through the design and marketing of addictive products.
They claim New York's school districts and various health and social services have been severely impacted by children suffering negative mental health consequences stemming from their use of popular social media apps.
In another development, a coalition of more than 40 attorneys general filed a joint federal lawsuit against Meta alleging that its products are addictive and harmful to mental health.
100 Starlink satellites could fall to Earth
In an announcement on February 12, SpaceX said that in the coming months, the company will carry out a controlled removal of about 100 of the first version of Starlink satellites.
These satellites have a common problem that can increase the chance of failure and becoming uncontrollable in the future.
The company determined that the removal operation for most of the satellites would take about six months.
SpaceX currently has 5,438 Starlink satellites in orbit out of 5,828 launched to date, according to Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who tracks SpaceX's internet satellites.
