As a criminology expert with many years of experience, Colonel - Associate Professor, Dr. Do Canh Thin, Deputy Director of the Institute of Non-Traditional Security (under Hanoi National University) shared with the press about the tricks and ways to avoid this sophisticated type of online fraud.

With many years of experience working in the police force and as a criminology expert, what is your assessment of fraud crimes via social networks such as Zalo and Facebook today?

The current situation of fraud on social networks is very complicated, many different types of fraud appear, causing anxiety for society. As a result, many victims fall into traps, causing great damage. Preventing and fighting this type of crime is also very difficult.

According to you, what causes this situation?

The main reason is that the internet space is very large, and participants can remain anonymous. People and victims cannot directly verify, confirm, or identify both the documents and information of the person they are communicating with via social networks.

That is why scammers take full advantage of this anonymity to create scenarios, stories, problems... to scam people for profit.

Common today, this type of fraud often creates websites impersonating reputable individuals and organizations to sell fake and poor quality goods. Or impersonating competent agencies and organizations to threaten people that they are involved in a case or have violated the law to manipulate their psychology, causing people to panic and have to provide personal information or transfer money and assets to the fraudster.

Also due to high anonymity, scammers on social networks also call for investment, capital contribution to gain quick profits or buy good health medicines... but in fact, this is just a way for them to "trap" people.

The most sophisticated tricks and tactics of this type of fraudster are often to prey on the greed and gullibility of the victims; taking advantage of people's lack of information to lure them. At the same time, they also target some people with shady social relationships and business practices to psychologically intimidate them into following their lead.

Specifically, a case was recently discovered in Dak Nong province, Thieu Thanh Long (residing in Dong Xuan district, Phu Yen province) used his personal Facebook to introduce a service to recover messages on Zalo. Facebook lured about 40 victims in many provinces and cities to transfer more than 300 million VND to Long, then Long appropriated it. According to you, what is the main reason why the victims were deceived in this case?

Because the victim is ignorant, gullible, and trusting, in this case, it must be understood that the above work must be done by a specialized agency or business with official notice and clear address.

Money transfers must have a basis for guarantee, a contract, and clear information about where the recipient is, who is the manager, and which company or agency they belong to. If you just listen to bad people's widespread enticements on Zalo and Facebook, you can easily become a victim of fraud.

Dear Colonel, what should we do to avoid falling into the above scam?

People need to raise their vigilance and increase their understanding of legal and social knowledge. Specifically, people and social network participants need to clearly understand that all state agencies, especially law enforcement agencies, never work over the phone or social networks, and never request money or property transfers through social networks or telephones. All must be done through invitations and documents.

When being enticed to buy goods through social networks, you need to find out clearly the sales address, the specific seller, details, and verify before transferring money to avoid being scammed.

Thank you sir.
