The old battlefield was covered with a vast green color and the national border was established with the blood and bones of tens of thousands of compatriots and soldiers.

Lesson 1 - 45 years of worshiping her husband and raising her only child

Although she has passed half of her life, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Dang (born in 1954, in Viet Hoa ward, Hai Duong city) still retains the image of her husband - martyr, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Pham Xuan Huan. Her husband's messages and stories about his bravery are the motivation that helps Mrs. Dang stay alone to raise her only daughter to adulthood.

He finally returned.

In a neat house covered with green trees at the end of a quiet alley on Viet Hoa Street, Viet Hoa Ward (Hai Duong City), Mrs. Nguyen Thi Dang and her daughter Pham Thi Thu Ha tearfully looked through the remaining artifacts of her husband, father - martyr, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Pham Xuan Huan. Those are a few medals stained by time, a certificate of merit "Excellent completion of flood prevention mission" of the Left Bank Military Region... All of those artifacts were from before, when the war on the northern border had not yet broken out. Because, before lying in the northern border, he had spent many years fighting on the battlefields of the South and Laos, during the war against the US.

Mr. Pham Xuan Huan, born in 1948 in Viet Hoa commune (Cam Giang district), now in Viet Hoa ward (Hai Duong city). In April 1968, when he was 20 years old, he said goodbye to his parents and his lover in the same village - now Mrs. Dang, to go to the South to fight.

Around 1977, two years after the victorious war against the US, the North and the South were united under one roof, he returned from Laos to Thanh Hoa. Upon hearing this news, Mrs. Dang found a way to get on a bus to visit her lover. The quick but emotional reunion of a soldier whose smell of gunpowder had not yet faded and a village girl who was only twenty-three years old, although not yet satisfying their longing, also brought them a small love, a daughter named Pham Thi Thu Ha, born in June 1977. When Thu Ha was eight months old, Mr. Huan returned home to visit once. At that time, the situation at the northern border was increasingly complicated. When his daughter was still not yet in his arms, Mr. Huan had to leave again.

"He put on his backpack, and when his daughter was asleep, he said goodbye to everyone and walked to Cao Xa station (Cam Giang) to go to the northern border. We only know that he went to fight the expansionist army, but we don't know the details. Once I read a letter he wrote, the fighting was fierce, and a lot of people poured into the border," Ms. Dang was moved.

A few days later, his comrades wrote to inform him that he had died. One afternoon, the postman stood outside and called out loudly: "Whoever is Ms. Dang, come out and receive the letter"... At that time, Mrs. Dang hugged her child, speechless, swallowing her tears. Although she knew that men in wartime were ready to "One green grass, two red chests", she hoped that the news that her husband had died was just a fake news...

But he eventually returned, but in a different form!

Take love and daughter as support

Her father died when she was very young. Pham Thi Thu Ha (left) was raised by her mother alone.

Losing her husband at the age of 25, and with a daughter less than 2 years old, thinking about the life ahead, Mrs. Dang knows it will be a thorny path.

On drizzly, windy nights, lying in the dilapidated house, Mrs. Dang could only hug her daughter tightly to find warmth. Thinking of her husband's determined eyes, then looking at her daughter's chubby cheeks, Mrs. Dang knew she would have to be stronger to raise her child, so that her husband's sacrifice would not be in vain.

"When I was very young, my father's unit took me to Sa Pa to visit his grave. Even though I was young, I still remember the tears of my father's comrades. At that time, I thought my father must be a hero," said Ms. Pham Thi Thu Ha.

Mr. Huan was the youngest child, so Mrs. Dang and her mother lived with her husband's parents. To support her family and her daughter who was often sick, Mrs. Dang had to do many jobs, but mainly relied on a few acres of contracted rice fields and a dozen pigs. Despite all the difficulties, the village never heard her complain. She swallowed all the hardships and longing to raise her children. Ms. Thu Ha graduated from Hanoi Law University, then worked at the Ministry of Justice. Later, she and her husband moved to Hai Duong City to live with her mother and work together in the business.

In 1997, after 18 years in the northern border, his grave was brought back to his family.

"Now there is still a wind grave there. In 1997, the family brought dad back and the commune organized a memorial service. At that time, the family understood more clearly about the war that dad and his comrades went through, and learned about dad's heroic sacrifice," said Thu Ha.

In 1979, Mr. Huan was a lieutenant, Captain of Company 10, Battalion 6, Regiment 148, Division 316, Military Region 2. In February 1979, he achieved many outstanding achievements, commanding the unit to destroy 250 enemies. On February 22, 1979, the enemy mobilized a large number of troops, supported by artillery, to attack the unit's position. Mr. Huan calmly commanded, intelligently and flexibly, fighting head-on, flanking and attacking from the rear. His unit destroyed hundreds of enemies, repelled many attacks, and held the position.

On February 23, 1979, the enemy mobilized a battalion, supported by artillery, to attack the battlefield. Mr. Huan commanded the unit to fight fiercely, fighting for every meter of trench and fortification. In this battle, he was credited with single-handedly destroying 45 enemies.

On February 28, 1979, after many heavy defeats, the enemy mobilized a large force, divided into many directions, many prongs to attack the battlefield. Mr. Huan commanded the unit to fight from morning to afternoon, repelled many attacks and heroically sacrificed after completing the mission.

Mr. Pham Xuan Huan was awarded the Third Class Military Exploit Medal, three Third Class Military Exploit Medals and the title of American Destroyer. On December 20, 1979, martyr Pham Xuan Huan was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
