Born in 1910 into a wealthy family in the imperial city of Hue, few people know that, as a child, Dang Van Ngu was a poor student at the bottom of the class, failing exams many times, to the point that his father was so angry that he tried to commit suicide. At that time, Dang Van Ngu woke up, focused on studying and made remarkable progress every day. The achievements Dang Van Ngu achieved became the pride of his parents and the whole family.

Boy Dang Van Ngu was sent to Hanoi to study at the Protectorate High School. At the age of 20, young Dang Van Ngu passed both the local Baccalaureate and the Western Baccalaureate, receiving a scholarship to enter the Indochina University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

In 1937, Dang Van Ngu graduated as a medical doctor and returned to Hue to marry his wife - the daughter of Mr. Ton That Dan. Between the choice of staying in Hue to open a private hospital or staying at school as an assistant with a small allowance, Dang Van Ngu still decided to take his wife to Hanoi and work at the school.

He became the first Vietnamese lecturer and head of the parasitology laboratory at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy. With 19 published scientific works, he is considered "Asia's leading parasitologist".

Young teacher Dang Van Ngu continued his studies in Japan - a country with many achievements in parasitology at that time.

In the context of the resistance war against France, medicines, especially antibiotics to fight infections, were extremely scarce. With only very rudimentary materials such as bamboo tubes, Dr. Dang Van Ngu created the first dose of penicillin. From here, penicillin preparations were produced and transferred to the front lines, promptly treating wounded Vietnamese soldiers.

After Liberation Day, Professor Dang Van Ngu became the founder and first Director of the Vietnam Institute of Malaria, Parasitology and Entomology. He and his colleagues researched and combined many measures to prevent malaria and finally controlled it in the North.

On the southern battlefield, malaria still tormented our soldiers no less than American bombs. Professor Dang Van Ngu led a delegation of the Institute's staff across Truong Son to the western region of Thua Thien, setting up a research station to find a malaria vaccine right there.

The work had just begun when an American B52 carpet bombing killed the entire station. That was April 1, 1967, when Professor Dang Van Ngu was only 57 years old...
