Prioritize domestic exploitation to serve the peak holiday season of September 2
According to reports from Vietnamese airlines, from August 30 to September 3, airlines will operate a total of 4,257 flights, an average of 840 flights/day, an increase of 3% compared to the previous holiday week and an increase of 3.5% compared to the same period in 2023.
Of which, the average number of domestic flights is 600 flights/day, an increase of 5% compared to the previous holiday week and an increase of 2.8% compared to the same period in 2023. The average number of international flights is 241 flights/day, a decrease of 2% compared to the previous holiday week and an increase of 5.1% compared to the same period in 2023.

Particularly for domestic flights and North-South routes (route connecting the three major cities of Hanoi - Da Nang - Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnamese airlines have increased their operations with an increase in the number of flights, with an average of 241 flights/day, an increase of 8% compared to the week before the holiday and an increase of 14.9% compared to the same period last year.
In fact, these are still the most "busy" domestic routes, with high operating frequency not only during major holidays of the year but also on normal days.
Domestic tourist flights (to localities such as Vinh, Binh Dinh, Da Lat, Phu Quoc) and flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to other localities are also being exploited by airlines, with an average of 171 flights/day on domestic tourist routes and 187 flights/day to other localities, up 2% and 4% respectively compared to the previous holiday week.
In the context of the decline in the fleet of Vietnamese airlines and the focus on domestic operations to serve the peak season of the National Day holiday on September 2, to meet the travel needs of passengers, the operation of international routes of Vietnamese airlines decreased slightly (-2%).
However, on international tourist routes alone, according to the airlines' reports, the number of flights still increased, with the total number of flights operated by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet averaging 27 flights/day, an increase of 5% compared to before the holiday and an increase of 95% compared to the same period last year.
The number of other international flights decreased slightly, with an average of 213 flights/day, down 3% compared to the previous holiday week and down 0.8% compared to the same period in 2023.
Increasing the number of flights during the upcoming holidays, especially on domestic routes, has allowed Vietnamese airlines to supplement the supply of seats to the market.
Accordingly, the total number of seats provided on domestic flights during August 30 - September 3, 2024 is expected to be more than 600,000 seats, an average of 122,000 seats/day, an increase of 5% compared to the previous holiday week and an increase of 1.5% compared to the same period last year.
Tourist routes and North-South routes are still the routes with the largest increase in the number of seats provided, with an average of 33,000 seats/day and 55.4 thousand seats/day, respectively, an average increase of 6.8% compared to the previous holiday week and an increase of 3% compared to the same period last year.
Ticket prices increase on the first and last days of the holiday
According to data from Vietnamese airlines, ticket prices during the National Day holiday on September 2 increased by about 20% compared to normal days before the holiday.
On the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City route, the highest recorded ticket price is about 2.6 million VND/way provided by Vietnam Airlines on August 30 during the daytime (including meals), an increase of 8% compared to a week earlier (August 23). Also during this flight time, Vietjet Air has a price of about 2.3 million VND/way, an increase of 25% compared to a week earlier.
On the Hanoi - Nha Trang route, ticket prices announced by airlines range from 2.4-3 million VND/way, an increase of about 24% compared to the previous holiday week.
Fares tend to increase, but mainly on the days starting and ending the holiday. For the days in between the holidays, the base fare is relatively stable, remaining at the same level as the days before the holiday.
At the same time, when compared with data from the peak holiday period of April 30 - May 1, although it is also the peak period of the year, ticket prices for the September 2 holiday have decreased significantly and maintained a stable pace during the past summer.
Accordingly, the price of basic economy class passenger transportation services on domestic flights during this period is lower, fluctuating 40-60% of the maximum level according to regulations.
The fact that Vietnamese airlines are balancing and arranging passenger transport plans during the peak holiday season of September 2 in particular and in the summer of 2024 in general. In the context of many difficulties, especially from the reduction of the number of aircraft fleets, is a very commendable effort and effort.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said that the agency also creates conditions for airlines to hire additional aircraft and confirm flight schedules so that airlines can promptly adjust plans, increase operations, and supply seats to meet market demand during peak periods.
Passengers traveling by air should book tickets early on the airline's official channels to have many options for ticket prices that suit their needs. At the same time, proactively monitor flight schedules and arrange travel time to airports to avoid congestion or inconvenience due to flight delays.
