Sun Group Corporation has just sent a document to the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction - PV) proposing to invest in the construction of Phu Quoc International Airport (phase 2).
Accordingly, Sun Group proposed to study and invest in the construction of Phu Quoc International Airport Phase 2 under the public-private partnership (PPP) method and Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) contract.

Specifically, the port will have a 4E airport level, with a passenger terminal capacity of about 18-20 million passengers/year. The cargo terminal capacity is expected to be 50,000 tons/year and the scale of the VVIP terminal is expected to be about 6,000 m2.
The total number of aircraft parking positions is suitable for the passenger terminal capacity. For the runway, the existing runway (runway 1) will be renovated and upgraded to 3500 x 45 m. The new runway (runway 2) will be planned to 3500 x 45 m. The taxiway system is synchronously connected.
Regarding aviation engineering works, building a hangar in the north of the port with a reserve area of about 230,000 m2, along with a ground equipment staging area (GSE), a fueling area,...
The aviation support facilities are of a scale that meets the port's operating capacity. At the same time, the location of the air traffic control tower and technical infrastructure will be adjusted to ensure synchronous flight operations.
Sun Group said that after the project has been adjusted by the competent state agency for planning, investment policy approval and project approval, the enterprise wants to participate in selecting investors according to the provisions of law.
If selected as the investor, Sun Group commits to investing in Phu Quoc International Airport with the most modern technology in the world, completing the project within 16-18 months from the completion of site clearance.
The group said that in the field of investment, construction, operation and exploitation of transport infrastructure projects under the PPP method (BT contracts and BOT contracts), Sun Group has a lot of capacity and experience.
These include the Van Don International Airport Project under the BOT contract form; the Ha Long - Van Don Expressway Construction Investment Project and the renovation and upgrading of National Highway 18, Ha Long - Mong Duong section under the BOT contract form;
Investment project to build Tien Yen - Mong Cai expressway under BOT contract with a total length of about 148km (Quang Ninh); Sea Square project, Sam Son city festival landscape axis under BT contract (Thanh Hoa) and Hoang Van Thai road extension project to Ba Na under BT contract with a length of about 10.47km (Da Nang).
At the same time, the enterprise has been appointed as the contractor for the Gia Binh airport project with a construction commitment period of 12 months.
Sun Group was established in 2007, operating in the fields of resort tourism, entertainment, real estate and infrastructure investment.
Previously, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam submitted to the Ministry of Transport for approval the Phu Quoc International Airport Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.
According to the submitted plan, Phu Quoc International Airport is a joint civil and military airport.
In the period of 2021 - 2030, Phu Quoc airport will be level 4E (according to the standard code of the International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO) and a level II military airport. Capacity of 10 million passengers/year and 25,000 tons of cargo/year. The total number of aircraft parking positions is 30 positions (5 code E + 25 code C), expanding when needed in the reserved land for aircraft parking development.
The aircraft types in operation are B747, B787, A350 and equivalent, with precision landing gear according to CAT II standards.
This phase will renovate and upgrade the existing runway (runway No. 1), planning to extend the runway towards the end of 28 to a size of 3,300m x 45m when needed, with material curb size according to regulations.
At the same time, the planning of CHC No. 2 has a size of 3,300m x 45m, about 360m from the center of the existing CHC to the North, with material curb size according to regulations.
Regarding the passenger terminal, by 2030, the existing T1 terminal with a capacity of about 4 million passengers/year will be maintained to serve domestic and international operations. In addition, a new T2 passenger terminal will be planned to the east of the existing T1 passenger terminal, with a capacity of about 6 million passengers/year and land reserves to expand the passenger terminal when needed.
In particular, the VIP guesthouse is planned to the East of the Air Traffic Control Tower to serve the APEC Summit Week 2027 held in Phu Quoc. After the APEC Summit Week ends, the VIP guesthouse will be used for international operations or general aviation operations.
