Italy Members of the Ultima Generazione group pour diluted coal into the Trevi Fountain in Rome to protest against fossil fuels.
Members of the activist group Ultima Generazione (Last Generation) held up banners reading "we won't pay for fossil fuels" and shouted "the country is dying" as they protested in central Rome on May 21.

Seven members of the group poured a liquid they described as diluted charcoal into the Trevi Fountain, causing it to gradually turn black.
Police had to wade into the water to arrest the activists in front of many tourists. Some passersby expressed their disapproval of the group's actions.
In a statement, Ultima Generazione called for an end to public subsidies for fossil fuels and said it was protesting because of the worst flooding in 100 years that hit the northern Emilia-Romagna region in recent days. According to the group, one in four homes in Italy is at risk of flooding.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri condemned the actions of Ultima Generazione against works of art. "Enough of these absurd attacks on our artistic heritage," he wrote on Twitter.
Last month, members of Ultima Generazione blackened the Carabinieri fountain in the center of the Italian capital in a similar act. On May 8, the group repeated the act by pouring a black liquid made from charcoal into the city’s Fiumi fountain.
