Magnificent natural heritage

Dak Nong UNESCO Global Geopark covers an area of over 4,700 km2, spread across 5 districts and cities of the province.

According to scientists, Dak Nong UNESCO Geopark has the largest volcanic cave system in Southeast Asia, with prehistoric archaeological sites that are very rare in volcanic caves in the world.

Along with the unique cultural features of the indigenous ethnic communities and famous landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, Dak Nong UNESCO Global Geopark has potential for tourism development, especially community tourism, experiential and discovery tourism.

The unique experiences at Dak Nong UNESCO Global Geopark left a strong impression on Mr. Nguyen Van Nam Anh, a photojournalist from Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr. Nam Anh shared: “I am very impressed with the cave system in Krong No district. Different from the limestone caves in the Central region, the volcanic caves here are very special. Every detail inside the cave shows traces of lava flows, creating an unmistakable beauty.”

On the journey to experience the “Epic of Fire and Water” - two typical elements of Dak Nong UNESCO Global Geopark, there is an attractive stop along Highway 28, passing through Nam N'dir Commune, Krong No District, which is a volcanic rice field stretching hundreds of hectares. With special soil, the rice grown here has delicious, sweet quality, creating the Krong No rice brand.

Mr. Le Hong Phuoc, a tourist from Binh Dinh province, expressed his feelings when arriving in this area: “When arriving at the Central Highlands route, from D'ray Sap waterfall along Highway 28 to Ta Dung lake, I was very impressed with the rice fields right below the valley. The rice fields stretch out, surrounded by hills and have a winding river flowing around them, reminding me of the rice fields in some northern provinces.”

Still many regrets

The regret of tourists when coming to Dak Nong UNESCO Global Geopark is that essential services and infrastructure have not met the demand. Currently, many destinations in Dak Nong UNESCO Global Geopark are simply stops for tourists to check-in. Most tourists have to find other places to stay and eat, while souvenirs and memorabilia are not diverse, not creating choices for tourists.

These shortcomings are also issues that many researchers and scientists have paid attention to and discussed at the provincial scientific conference organized by the Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee on the afternoon of December 26. The workshop with the theme "Dak Nong UNESCO Global Geopark with the goal of sustainable development" proposed solutions to promote the development of the local tourism industry.

Mr. Nguyen Khac Anh, Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dak Nong province, said that tourism development in general, agricultural tourism, farm tourism in the area still face many difficulties and challenges for sustainable development. Community tourism, agricultural tourism is still spontaneous, agricultural products are still monotonous.

“Most agricultural tourism businesses are spontaneous, small-scale, and have weak competitiveness. Most individual tourism businesses have not received any training in agricultural tourism, so the quality of service to tourists is not high,” Mr. Anh said.

Mr. Nguyen Khac Anh, Head of Tourism Management Department, Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the province presented a speech.

The scientific workshop to discuss solutions for orientation "Developing local tourism products in Krong No district associated with the potential and strengths of the core area of Dak Nong UNESCO Global Geopark" organized by the People's Committee of Krong No district in August 2024 also discussed this issue.

Mr. Le Van Ha, Institute of Human Geography, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, said that tourism in Krong No district and Dak Nong province still shows many limitations, and has not exploited the potentials and strengths associated with the brand of the Geopark.

“Developing tourism associated with agriculture and rural areas is still in the potential stage or has just begun to develop spontaneously. The cause of this problem comes from subjective and objective factors such as not yet building an agricultural planning area associated with agricultural and rural tourism; difficulties and obstacles related to forest land, converting agricultural land to business land; granting construction permits for accommodation types...”, Mr. Le Van Ha assessed.

Need more breakthroughs

Besides the professional shortcomings, limited resources and concerns about violating regulations on geological heritage management are barriers that prevent Dak Nong from promoting its strengths from the title of Global Geopark.

Ms. Le Thi Hong An, Director of Nam Blang Dak Nong Cooperative, proposed some solutions for tourism development.
