A notorious street for prostitution in the Kita district of Osaka, Japan, has been painted yellow as part of an effort to create psychological pressure so that prostitutes will no longer stand there waiting for customers.
A Japanese city pilots a method to combat street prostitution.
Osaka City authorities (Japan) painted a 100-meter-long street in the central Kita district yellow in December 2024. The reason for choosing the bright color for the street is to create a psychological effect to prevent prostitutes from working on the street, The Straits Times reported on January 5.
Official Osaka figures show that there were an average of 10 tachinbo, with tachinbo being the term for street prostitutes, working on the street every night before the paint change was implemented.
After the street was painted yellow, there were almost no prostitutes left, according to Tokyo Weekender .
Meanwhile, The Japan News reported that last year, Osaka police arrested 20 prostitutes suspected of violating the country's anti-prostitution laws.
The arrests were made while street girls solicited customers for sex in the area.
However, despite police patrols, street prostitution continues, with some residents forced to move away because they cannot bear the negative impact of their living environment.
Late last year, local authorities came up with the idea of painting the streets in new colors to combat prostitution ahead of the 2025 Osaka-Kansai International Expo.
According to a theory of behavioral economics, using eye-catching colors on the road will create a psychological effect, making it harder for people to stand on a road for long.
In addition to the yellow paint, the road has also been decorated with colorful drawings of various fish. Residents in the area hope this strategy will have a positive effect on efforts to combat street prostitution.
If successful, Japan could replicate the street painting in places also notorious for street prostitution.
