After all, the goal of digital transformation is to build press agencies in a modern, professional, humane and socially serving direction... That will also be the focus of discussion at the International Conference "Digital Press Management, Theory, Practice, Experience in the ASEAN Region" organized by the Vietnam Journalists Association on December 7 in Hanoi.
“If you want to go far, go together”…
Going together means welcoming opportunities and facing challenges together! In fact, as a rule, digital transformation is currently a global technology trend, having a huge impact on the economic - political - social fields of countries around the world. In the field of journalism, digital transformation is the process of applying increasingly modern technology to the production and distribution of information, enriching the digital media ecosystem with new, superior features, helping to improve the quality and effectiveness of communication to the public.
Obviously, the world press has changed a lot in recent years, the traditional way of making newspapers is no longer suitable, requiring understanding modern journalism skills to attract readers. In addition, digital journalism promotes strong social interactions: interactions between newspapers, between newspapers and the public, between newspapers and social networks, between the public, between the public and authorities, between press agencies and policy-making and management agencies...
Digital journalism creates information metadata on the network environment, connecting and mobilizing the public to solve social problems at the community, national, and international levels... Besides those opportunities, digital transformation also brings significant challenges, the biggest of which is the fierce competition of social networks with the characteristics of easy access, easy sharing, fast and diverse information... We are no longer struggling with the question: What is digital transformation or where to start, but the important thing in this context is "how to manage that digital newsroom?" to make the most of the opportunities and overcome the current very interesting challenges.
The Vietnam Journalists Association organized the International Workshop on “Digital Press Management, Theory, Practice, and Experience in the ASEAN Region” to realize the proposal of the Vietnam Journalists Association to host a workshop on digital transformation in journalism at the 20th General Assembly of the Confederation of ASEAN Journalists (CAJ)… and also to contribute to creating more cohesion and solidarity among press agencies in the region.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi - Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association emphasized: "The organization of the Workshop "Digital Press Management: Theory, Practice, Experience in the ASEAN Region" will help press agencies and journalists in ASEAN better understand and participate more deeply in digital transformation, contributing to creating a stronger ASEAN press, updating new ways of journalism, promoting the spread of press information in the region more strongly and better. From there, contributing to mutual understanding between the public and people of ASEAN with the economic, cultural and social situation of each country; strengthening friendship and cooperation between countries in the region".
Let's learn and apply the model of building and managing an effective digital newsroom.
One of the goals in the 2023 action plan of the Vietnam Journalists Association is to aim for a broad and prestigious forum on the issue of digital transformation of journalism to exchange, learn and enhance the position of the Association in the current context. One of the biggest motivations for the Vietnam Journalists Association to be determined to carry out this event is the consensus and very positive response of press delegations in the ASEAN region.
According to the Organizing Committee, the connection with press delegations in the region went very smoothly, receiving high response, and the press delegations all prepared their presentations to send to the Conference. At this conference, the Vietnam Journalists Association was honored to welcome international delegates who are press managers, representatives of press and media associations and experienced journalists from 7 ASEAN countries to attend the conference: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia.
The press delegations in the region all affirmed that the digital transformation of the media is not only a matter of survival, but also necessary for the development of press agencies, media organizations and journalists. Building ASEAN press into a unified bloc is very important because in ASEAN there is a connection between 3 pillars, the pillars of security - politics, economy and culture. In particular, organizing the ASEAN Press Conference will contribute to building these 3 pillars, especially in the pillars of culture, press information...
The workshop will include two sessions: Session 1: Discussing general theoretical issues on digital newsroom management. Session 2: Discussing practical issues, experiences and solutions for implementing digital newsroom management. Experts will clarify general theoretical issues on digital journalism and digital newsrooms, including digital platforms and digital tools in newsroom management. At the same time, discuss and point out new issues that need further research in building digital newsrooms.
In addition, the Workshop will also discuss the development trends of digital journalism in the world and ASEAN countries; the opportunities and challenges posed in the context of the digital transformation trend taking place widely in many areas of social life, and changes in the public during the digital transformation process leading to changes in press production.
In particular, there will be presentations and exchanges of practical experiences in different countries; thereby proposing practical and feasible solutions to transform the operations of newsrooms of press agencies towards building a digital newsroom model. In particular, it will emphasize specific instructions on how press agencies have been and are implementing technology applications in building and managing newsrooms in press agencies in different countries... to learn from each other and apply models of building and managing digital newsrooms effectively. Of course, looking at digital transformation does not only see "rosy", bright opportunities but also great challenges. Therefore, in this workshop, ASEAN countries will frankly recognize, evaluate, and even look at the difficulties that must be overcome such as human resources, financial resources in investment to implement effectively and appropriately for each country.
Coming to the International Conference “Digital Press Management, Theory, Practice, Experience in ASEAN Region” we will have the opportunity to listen to the sharing of experiences on digital transformation in the field of journalism from members of the ASEAN Press Confederation; on policies and solutions of countries in supporting and promoting digital transformation of journalism and media; on successful models of digital transformation of journalism and media...
This workshop also creates an open exchange mechanism to share the situation, progress, and best practices for digital transformation in the field of journalism and media of ASEAN countries. From there, continue to discuss and propose initiatives and priorities for cooperation in the coming time within the ASEAN community; to jointly build professional, modern, humane press agencies, effectively innovate readers' experiences, create new sources of revenue, promote the development of the digital content industry, etc.
