The Swedish Academy has just awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature to Korean writer Han Kang. When the Academy announced her name, she was in Seoul, South Korea.
Han Kang is an author who has made a great mark in both poetry and prose. She published her first poems - which also marked her as a writer - in 1993 in the magazine Literature and Society . In 1995, Han Kang published the short story collection Love of Yeosu , marking the blossoming of her talent in prose.
Since 1995, the author from Gwangju (South Korea) has published a series of novels and short stories, most notably The Vegetarian (2007). This novel helped her name become widely known internationally.

The organizing committee decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature to Han Kang for her diligent writing, whose works closely follow contemporary social life. In the press release announcing the award, the Academy commented that Han Kang's works "display a double pain - mental and physical pain, but are closely related to Eastern thoughts".
Not only that, the organizers also emphasized that Han Kang's compositions "with strong poetic and narrative lines have highlighted the traumas of history as well as the fragments of human life".
With this victory, Han Kang is the first Asian female author (and the first Korean female author) to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. She surpassed many important and equally excellent authors to be honored with this award. However, there is one thing that is quite similar between Han Kang and the male Asian writers who were awarded the prize before her: they both touched on historical elements, deeply depicting human pain associated with historical elements.
In Vietnam, many of Han Kang's works have been translated and published to readers, the earliest being The Vegetarian published in 2011 (Tre Publishing House), White published in 2022 (Nha Nam and Hanoi Publishing House), and The Nature of People published in 2023 (Nha Nam and Hanoi Publishing House).
