'Ho Guom Theater has all the elements of a great theater'

* Last December, Ho Guom Opera House (Hanoi) was the only representative of Vietnam in the list of "Top 10 best opera houses in the world" on the 10best website of the World Travel Awards - WTA. What is your impression of this achievement?

- Mr. John Pellower: I think this is really great news not only for the theater but also for Hanoi. Because the Hoan Kiem Theater is a fairly new project but has received such great recognition from a major award organization in the world. This place has all the elements of a great theater. I am very happy to know this information.

* Although it has just been launched, Ho Guom Theatre has stood shoulder to shoulder with world icons such as the Metropolitan Opera House (USA), Wiener Staatsoper (Italy), Sydney Opera House (Australia)... in this award. In your opinion, what makes Ho Guom Theatre stand out and different to achieve such success?

- Ho Guom Theater has many outstanding features compared to the names on the list of this award. This is one of the theaters with the best equipment in the region and even the world, from equipment serving the stage to sound services.

* It is known that to create the best listening experience for the audience, we cannot ignore the strong relationship between acoustics and architecture. What do you think about this when building the sound system for Ho Guom Theater?

- The first thing we have to do with a theater is to look at its architecture. We can't change the appearance, so the important thing is to weave the sound system into the theater's architecture in a way that the audience can't see but can feel most clearly. And we also need to make sure that the theater's sound system will be able to adapt to all types of performances.

* Constellation is arguably the most advanced sound system in the world currently being used for the Hoan Kiem Theater. Is there a more advanced system that Meyer Sound is planning to add to the theater, sir?

- We first started introducing Constellation into theatres around the world in 2006. Since then, the sound system has been continuously developed.

We are in the process of launching a completely new digital platform with more optimized costs. The loudspeaker system will be newly developed and larger. Along with smarter processing. The development of Constellation is an ongoing process.

We are also making improvements to the sound quality to better integrate with the design of the theater. Installation and operation are also easier with higher performance.

* What was the biggest challenge in setting up and upgrading the theater's sound system? What did you and your colleagues do to find the optimal solution to those challenges?

- Every theatre is different and we have to talk a lot with the management, consultants and architects. We have to bring them all together to find a common goal, to allow the acoustic system to work in the best possible way.

* In your opinion, how has high-quality sound gradually changed the way performances are evaluated in the world? And how has Meyer Sound brought the performances of the Hoan Kiem Theater to a new level?

- With a good sound system, the performances will be much better. If you don't have good sound, how can you perform well? So I think sound is the key to the success of an opera house, a concert hall or any other building. And we have created different types of sound to be able to adapt to different performances and different types of programs.

With a good sound system, the performances will be much more wonderful.
