A man in Japan has four wives, two girlfriends and wants to have 54 children with the hope of becoming a "god of marriage", according to the South China Morning Post reported on October 17.

Mr. Ryuta Watanabe (36 years old) lives in Hokkaido province in northern Japan, has not worked for the past 10 years, living entirely on the salaries of his wife and girlfriend.

His wives were essentially cohabitants rather than registered marriages. Mr. Watanabe is the father of 10 children and lives with two of them and his three wives, according to Shueisha Online .

He takes on the role of a househusband, cooking, doing housework and taking care of the children. The family's monthly living expenses are nearly 914,000 yen (154 million VND), divided equally between his wives and girlfriends.

Mr. Watanabe has a fourth wife, 24 years old, but they are separated. In addition, he met two girlfriends through social networks.

Six years ago, Watanabe was a depressed guy living on welfare and dumped by his girlfriend. He says this prompted him to start dating various women through apps.

Earlier this year, on Japan's Abema Prime TV show, Mr. Watanabe said: "I only love women. As long as we love each other equally, there will be no problem."

He said each wife had her own room and took turns sleeping with them. He claimed he had sex more than 28 times a week and said the wives were never jealous and lived together as friends.

This man aims to have 54 children, breaking the record for the person with the most children in Japan, becoming the "god of marriage". Online sources claim that Tokugawa Ienari, a shogun in Japan who died in 1841, had about 53 children with 27 women during the Edo period.

Polygamy is illegal in Japan, meaning Mr Watanabe cannot legally marry more than one woman at a time.

Mr Watanabe's unconventional family lifestyle has attracted attention on social media. "His children will never be able to have a close relationship with their father because he has so many children," wrote one YouTuber.

"I will never let my child end up like this man," said another.

However, some people have a different opinion. "They seem to be a happy family. Let's respect their choice," one netizen commented.
