Local staple crops
The entire Vu Quang district, Ha Tinh province has over 400 hectares of lemon trees, mainly concentrated in Duc Linh commune with an area of 312 hectares. From spontaneous planting, but with the advantages of being easy to grow, easy to care for, bringing stable income, the lemon area is increasingly expanding and lemon trees have been chosen by people as the main crop of the locality.

On the hillsides of Duc Linh mountainous commune, lemon gardens are lush and laden with fruit. At this time, buyers and sellers become bustling, trucks full of lemons travel the roads to import to wholesale markets, restaurants, etc.
The family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai Duong, in Cao Phong village, Duc Linh commune, has been growing lemon trees for more than 15 years on an area of over 2 hectares. Thanks to the application of scientific and technical advances in production, lemon trees yield high yields in each crop.
Ms. Duong said: "This main lemon crop, my family expects to harvest more than 18 tons of fruit. Lemons are in season and have good prices, so for nearly a week now, the whole family has been busy harvesting. With prices ranging from 11,000 - 12,000 VND/kg, my family expects to earn more than 250 million VND."
"Lemon trees produce two harvests a year, the main crop from July to the end of August, the fruit crop from the end of December to February of the following year. If well cared for, a lemon tree can last up to 20 years. In recent years, every harvest season, traders come to the garden to buy, making selling less difficult for farmers," Ms. Duong revealed.

Realizing the economic efficiency of lemon trees, Mr. Nguyen Van An's family, residing in Cao Phong village, Duc Linh commune, converted more than 1 hectare of hilly land that was previously used to grow cassava with low economic efficiency into lemon trees. Up to now, more than 300 trees have been harvested for the second year. Thanks to the focus on applying science and technology, the lemon trees are fruitful, juicy, and have beautiful fruit, and are purchased by traders right at the garden.
Mr. Nguyen Van An shared: "My family has only invested in growing lemons for 4 years. Growing lemons requires little care, and the growing technique is not too difficult. It is important to choose a quality lemon variety, pay attention to pruning techniques, cover the roots, and care for each stage of development. For the family's lemon garden, we mainly use decomposed manure, limit the use of chemical fertilizers, so the trees are healthy. It is only the second harvest but the fruit yield is high, the fruit quality is safe, so many customers order it.

"Currently, the family has sold more than 3-5 quintals of lemons. Despite the hot weather, the lemons still grow well, the fruit is big and beautiful, and the price is good. It is expected that this 1-hectare lemon garden will yield more than 8 tons of fruit, bringing in about 100 million VND in revenue.
Lemon is a fruit used daily in family meals, restaurants... so it is consumed strongly, especially in the summer. The family is quite confident when sticking with this type of tree. Currently, besides harvesting lemons, we are renovating more garden land to expand and plant 200 more lemon trees next October," Anh said excitedly.
Farmers prosper from lemon trees
According to long-time lemon growers in Duc Linh commune, it is only the beginning of the crop season, but traders in the area as well as in Vinh City (Nghe An), Quang Binh have come to buy the whole garden, selling everything as soon as it is harvested, without any hoarding or price gouging.

Mr. Le Quoc Huy (a trader in Vinh City, Nghe An) specializes in purchasing lemons in Duc Linh Commune, said: "For many years, we have chosen Duc Linh Commune to purchase lemons in large quantities. Lemons here are different from other regions, with thin skin, lots of juice, and large, beautiful fruit. In particular, lemons in this region have a cool, aromatic scent, typical of mountainous areas. The price is higher than the general level, but we still buy them, because lemons here are very popular with consumers from North to South."

"On average, I buy 5-6 tons of lemons every day to send to the provinces for consumption. The market is favorable, so I take advantage of buying for people. Currently, lemons are purchased at the garden at a price of 11,000 - 12,000 VND/kg, depending on the size of the fruit. Hopefully in the coming days, the price of lemons will increase so that people can have more income," said Mr. Huy.
According to Duc Linh commune people, lemon trees are very suitable for the soil and climate of the local hilly area, so they are easy to grow and care for, and have high productivity. From growing lemons, many families have escaped poverty and become well-off households in the locality.

Talking to PV Dan Viet, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan - Vice Chairman of Duc Linh Commune People's Committee, said: "For many years, lemon trees have been considered the main crop of the locality. This year, the weather is quite favorable, the yield and output of lemons are quite high, it is estimated that with an area of about 290 hectares of lemons being harvested, this crop will reach an output of more than 5,200 tons. It is worth mentioning that wherever lemons are harvested, traders come to the garden to buy them, the selling price is higher than previous years, so people are very excited."
"Currently, in addition to urging people to focus on harvesting to ensure income, local authorities are coordinating with specialized agencies to strengthen guidance for people to check and remove old, low-yielding trees to plan for replanting and expanding new planting areas. Focus on applying organic production processes to increase product value, bringing higher income to people," said Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan - Vice Chairman of Duc Linh Commune People's Committee.
