People in a district in Binh Duong said absentmindedly that they had never seen green-skinned grapefruit so cheap that the fruit fell off and was left alone.

After Tet, the grapefruit growing area in Bac Tan Uyen district, Binh Duong province suddenly saw a sharp drop in the price of green-skin grapefruit, the price of grapefruit was very cheap, only 5,000-7,000 VND/kg. Traders were nowhere to be seen, and the grapefruits were left to fall.

Green-skinned grapefruit prices hit rock bottom

Mr. Le Minh Sang - Director of Tan My Fruit Cooperative in Tan My commune (Bac Tan Uyen district, Binh Duong province) said that after decades of growing grapefruit, he has never seen grapefruit prices drop as dramatically as they do now.

Mr. Sang said that about 2 months before Tet, the price of grapefruit was still quite high, but the closer to Tet, the lower the price. Good grapefruit costs only over 30,000 VND/kg.

"However, this price is still quite high because since Tet until now, the price of grapefruit has been decreasing. Currently, the price of grapefruit is only 5,000 VND/kg," said Mr. Sang.

Mr. Tran Van Hung is growing more than 100 green-skinned grapefruit trees in Bao Quang commune (Long Khanh city, Dong Nai province).

Mr. Hung said that the current price of grapefruit sold in bulk is only 5,000 VND/kg but it is still difficult to sell. There were times when gardeners could not sell.

After more than 5 years of growing grapefruit, the price of grapefruit has never been as low as this year. With this price, gardeners only have enough money to fertilize and spray pesticides and are trying to hold on.

Living in the same commune of Bao Quang, Mrs. Phan Thi Nhan has 4 sao of pink pomelos. Her pomelo garden is nearly 20 years old.

Ms. Nhan said that the grapefruit market has shown signs of slowing down, and the price of grapefruit for Tet is not as high as in previous years. Currently, traders at her grapefruit garden are offering only 3,000 VND/kg.

But after making an appointment, they left and never returned. Mrs. Nhan called more traders but no one came to buy, leaving the grapefruits scattered all over the ground.

Green-skinned grapefruit prices will soon increase again

Mr. Nguyen Van Hang in Binh Phan commune (Cho Gao district, Tien Giang province) is growing nearly 1 hectare of green-skinned grapefruit.

Mr. Hang said that, contrary to every year, the price of green-skinned grapefruit during Tet is quite low, ranging from 20,000-25,000 VND/kg in the garden for beautiful grapefruit.

A month ago, the price of grade 1 green-skin pomelos fluctuated around 10,000 VND/kg; grade 2 and grade 3 pomelos cost from 5,000-8,000 VND/kg. Currently, the price of grade 1 pomelos has also dropped below 10,000 VND/kg.

"One of the main reasons given by traders is that the amount of grapefruit harvested during Tet this year is very large. The slow consumption makes gardeners worried because the cost is very high," said Mr. Hang.

According to Mr. Le Minh San in Bac Tan Uyen district (Binh Duong province), Tet grapefruit in the country is mainly for export to China.

However, before Tet, the weather in China was very cold. Demand dropped sharply, goods could not be brought to consumption, so there was a lot of congestion.

After Tet, the grapefruit that customers buy to display is still available because it can be kept for a long time. Demand after Tet has not increased much.

Meanwhile, the remaining grapefruit in the garden, which is reserved for sale after Tet, is still ripening. This batch of grapefruit is not as beautiful as the grade 1 grapefruit sold before Tet.

"All these reasons have caused the price of green-skin pomelos to drop low," Mr. Sang explained.

However, Mr. Sang predicts that in about half a month, the old grapefruit source will be out of stock. "After April, the price of green-skin grapefruit will gradually increase again," Mr. Sang predicts.
