58 provinces choose English as the third subject for 10th grade entrance exam
On the afternoon of March 28, the Ministry of Education and Training held a conference to deploy enrollment work at the beginning of the school year, organize high school graduation exams and evaluate the implementation of Circular No. 29/2024/TT-BGDDT.
According to the Ministry of Education and Training, up to now, 100% of localities and higher education institutions with secondary schools and high schools have issued enrollment plans for the 2025-2026 school year.
According to statistics, 60 provinces/cities organize entrance exams for grade 10, of which 58 provinces choose English as the third subject, 2 provinces (Ha Giang and Binh Thuan) choose History and Geography as the third subjects; 3 provinces organize entrance exams for students to public schools (Ca Mau, Vinh Long, Gia Lai) in which there is an announcement of the third subject and exam schedule for high school and specialized high school entrance exams .
Most Departments of Education and Training have developed and published reference exam questions for grade 10 entrance exams to serve as a basis and guide for review for grade 9 students.

Candidates registering for the entrance exam to specialized high schools will take 4 subjects, including 3 subjects like candidates applying for general high schools and 1 specialized subject according to the specialized class they registered for. For some specialized schools under universities, they have coordinated with the Department of Education and Training to develop an enrollment plan in accordance with the provisions of Circular No. 30 and ensure proper implementation of the enrollment principles.
Regarding the entrance exam schedule, according to the report, the Departments of Education and Training have developed a plan to organize the entrance exam in the first week of June to ensure consistency with the high school graduation exam in 2025.
According to the Ministry's regulations, the number of subjects and exams for grade 10 includes: Math, Literature and a third subject or exam chosen by the Department of Education and Training from one of the following two options:
The third exam subject is selected from among the subjects assessed by scores in the secondary school general education program, ensuring that the same third exam subject is not selected for more than 3 consecutive years.
The third exam is a combination exam of a number of subjects selected from among the subjects assessed by scores in the secondary school general education program.
For high schools under the Ministry of Education and Training, universities, colleges, and research institutes that organize their own entrance exams, the third exam subject or a combination exam of a number of remaining subjects will be selected by the Ministry of Education and Training, universities, colleges, and research institutes directly managed by them.
The third exam or combined exam of a number of subjects is announced after the end of semester I but no later than March 31 every year.
Exam time: Literature 120 minutes; Math 90 minutes or 120 minutes; third subject 60 minutes or 90 minutes; combined exam 90 minutes or 120 minutes
There are still some concerns and confusion.
According to the assessment of the Ministry of Education and Training, the primary school enrollment work according to Circular No. 30 has received high consensus and special attention from society, so it has been quickly grasped and promptly implemented, meeting the expectations of society. The team of managers and teachers has a fuller and clearer awareness of the responsibility and importance of the work of junior high school enrollment and high school enrollment.
Authorities at all levels raise awareness of their roles and responsibilities in managing and directing enrollment work, especially in handling unusual incidents that occur during the organization of middle school and high school enrollment. Parents clearly recognize the role of families in coordinating management and creating conditions for students to review and take exams.
However, there are still some managers and teachers who do not fully understand the regulations and spirit of Circular No. 30; there are still some opinions that are hesitant and confused. Some Departments of Education and Training still rigidly understand the regulations on admission to specialized high schools and preferential treatment for students in areas with particularly difficult socio-economic conditions. The Ministry of Education and Training has issued a number of official dispatches providing specific guidance to the Departments of Education and Training.
