While traveling from the mainland to Phu Quy Island ( Binh Thuan Province) by speedboat, Mr. TDL (28 years old) sat on the deck to enjoy the breeze, sunbathe, and fell asleep without realizing it. When the boat was about to dock, Mr. L. woke up, feeling hot and uncomfortable all over, with his face, chest, and stomach red and sore.

“It was then that I realized I had slept in the sun for 2 hours, from about 10-12 noon,” said Mr. L.

Returning home after 3 days of traveling, the sunburn on his body still did not heal like the previous times, and was even more serious. His face was peeling, his eyes were swollen, his chest and abdomen were red and sore, and there were blisters in some places, making Mr. L. itchy, uncomfortable all over his body, having trouble sleeping, affecting his daily life and work.

After examination, specialist doctor Nguyen Thi Kim Dung, Tam Anh General Hospital, said that Mr. L. had irritant contact dermatitis and second-degree burns due to prolonged exposure to intense sunlight.

Dr. Dung prescribed Mr. L. oral anti-inflammatory medication, vitamin PP and a daily moisturizer. Mr. L. was instructed on how to take care of his skin, such as taking cool baths, drinking plenty of water, avoiding scratching the burned area, avoiding direct sunlight or taking measures to protect his skin when going out.

Limit going out and sunbathing at noon

Since the end of February, the South has entered the hot season with high temperatures and UV rays. Doctor Dung said that during the hot season, there are many cases of sunburn. Most of them are burns to one area of the body such as the face, neck, arms, legs; cases of second-degree sunburn, large areas like Mr. L. are serious.

Sunburn not only causes symptoms of redness, pain, swelling, edema, peeling skin, making the skin age faster, increasing the risk of skin cancer, but severe conditions can also cause eye damage, heat shock, dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, and even death if not treated promptly.

Therefore, the first thing to do when sunburned is to stop exposure to sunlight; cool the damaged skin by applying a towel soaked in clean water or bathing with cool water. After cooling the skin, apply a moisturizer, lotion or gel from aloe vera or containing trolamine or hydrocortisone to soothe the skin. Avoid applying products containing alcohol, snake fat, coconut oil or peeling methods to the sunburned skin because it can cause infection and more serious damage.

Dr. Dung recommends that people limit going out, especially sunbathing at noon when UV rays are at their peak. If exposed to sunlight, protect your skin with long-sleeved clothing, hats, masks, and gloves. Wear UV-blocking glasses to protect your eyes and surrounding skin. Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day, reapply every 2-3 hours if swimming or staying in the sun for long periods of time, apply moisturizer, drink plenty of water to cool and protect your skin, and reduce the risk of skin cancer.

If you have signs of sunburn such as swelling, pain, redness, especially blistering skin after exposure to sunlight, you should see a doctor soon at a medical facility with a dermatology specialist.
