Mr. Jon Standen, the new principal of Australian International School (AIS), said that an inspiring school will help students love learning and develop comprehensively.

- What made you accept the position of principal of AIS, next August?

- AIS is a long-standing school with an excellent reputation. It is part of the Inspired Group, and the benefits of being part of such a group are clear. AIS’s philosophy of inspiring students to learn and emphasising the whole child are consistent with my own beliefs about what makes a great school and a great education for every child. A well-rounded education encourages the development of the whole child, including natural academic success, while ensuring that children have the opportunity to develop the skills and qualities that will stand them in good stead for life after they graduate from AIS.

- What do you think are the factors that make a great school for students?

- Let me take AIS Saigon as an example. We aim to provide the best all-round education, not only for our boarding students in Vietnam, but also for students across Southeast Asia with our boarding facilities. This goal is built on five key beliefs.

Firstly, academic rigour and curiosity will help students succeed in exams, and gain access to the best universities and employers. Our school values enthusiasm for learning at school and encourages students to be lifelong learners.

Second, success in life is not determined by grades alone. It is personal qualities and values that determine whether a person will have a successful career and a successful life. Our holistic education ensures that students graduate balanced, resilient and creative individuals with the leadership skills to turn opportunities into reality.

Third, a happy child is a successful child. Students who are safe and happy during their school days are more likely to reach their potential. At AIS Saigon, children’s academic success and overall development are rooted in the care and concern of their teachers and friends, and these friendships can last a lifetime. Our students grow up to be confident, creative, inquisitive adults with the skills and qualities to make a difference in the world and fulfil their dreams.

Fourth, we recruit the best staff and support them in their professional development. We believe that staff are central to the success of the school, and that they model the values that the school pursues. Teachers love their jobs, value understanding the individual needs of each student, and nurture their development.

And fifth, the school always works closely with parents, and values their opinions.

The educational environment at AIS will inspire students to learn, help them have more fun at school and have aspirations to improve their lives.

- What are the outstanding advantages of AIS, sir?

- I have visited the school many times since my appointment. From these visits, I can see the close bond between teachers, students and parents, and the warmth and friendliness of this community. AIS is already a very successful school, and I hope that during my tenure as principal, the school will develop further. The school has three campuses, all of which are conveniently located. Being a member of the Inspired Education Group brings many benefits and opportunities to the school's students. They will study alongside and learn from their peers in other countries and continents. It is very exciting.

- In your opinion, what are the benefits for AIS students when studying the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme?

- In the final two years of secondary school, students undertake the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, an international curriculum that is highly regarded by universities around the world. The IB Programme provides students with a broad and balanced education, while allowing them to delve deeper into subjects and see the connections between them. It teaches students to develop and use transferable skills that will be used in university, in the workplace and in life long after they graduate from AIS.

As an English-speaking international school, our expert team consists mainly of foreign teachers. They support students to achieve academic excellence, opening doors for success at home and abroad. Students learn about different cultures and perspectives, develop networks and build friendships across the globe. They impress international universities and future employers academically. They have a diverse and vibrant community. Students are invited to join clubs, be part of leadership teams, compete in inter-school competitions, enjoy camps and field trips, and get involved in fundraising for community programs.

I invite families to experience AIS for themselves. Our Admissions Office and I look forward to welcoming parents and students, and introducing them to an AIS education.
