The Ninh Binh Solid Waste Treatment Plant is located in Dong Son commune, Tam Diep city, Ninh Binh province. It receives and processes household waste for the entire Ninh Binh province.

The plant receives and processes waste using two methods: sorting for compost production and sanitary landfilling. The waste sorting area for compost production at the plant has more than a dozen workers, mostly women, engaged in this unusual job.

Waste from various parts of Ninh Binh City is collected and dumped at the sorting area. Here, excavators dump the waste onto conveyor belts, and workers stand on either side to sort it. The purpose of waste sorting is to produce bio-fertilizer, reuse household waste, and minimize landfilling.

Mr. La Phu Dung, Director of the Ninh Binh Solid Waste Treatment Plant, said that the plant started operating in 2014. Each year, the plant receives and processes approximately 125,000 tons of waste. Of this, 12,000 tons are processed through sorting for the production of bio-fertilizer. All the waste sorted for bio-fertilizer production is handled by the plant's workers.

The women working as waste sorters at the Ninh Binh Solid Waste Treatment Plant all have many years of experience. Initially, many couldn't stand the smell of garbage when they started. Over time, they got used to it, and some have been working there for nearly a decade.

In this unique and unusual profession, these women have to live in an atmosphere filled with the smells of garbage dumped from all directions for at least 8 hours a day (working two shifts a day).

Ms. PTC shared: "Every day, we come to work at the factory in the morning, go home for lunch, and then come back to work in the afternoon. After every hour of sorting garbage, we get a 10-minute break. The work isn't very strenuous, but the smell of garbage is truly agonizing."

Ms. C. further shared that, due to daily exposure to all kinds of waste from various places and all sorts of foul odors, they've gradually become accustomed to it. The women working in this profession often joke with each other, saying they feel sad if they don't get to smell the garbage on any given day.

Even from hundreds of meters away from the waste sorting and processing area, the stench is overwhelming. Upon closer inspection, the women working in waste sorting endure the conditions and diligently continue their work. Ms. D.T.L. stated that those who do this job not only earn a living but also love their work.

"The smell of garbage is unpleasant everywhere at the workplace; we have to wear masks in multiple layers all the time. Being exposed to all kinds of garbage, people like us really need nerves of steel to endure it," said Ms. L.

The work is unique and not physically demanding, but the working environment is polluted. However, the income of women who sort waste is only at the level of a regular wage. Therefore, during the waste sorting and processing process, the women collect recyclable waste items and sell them as scrap.

The women working sorting waste at the factory are of various ages. Some are in their early twenties, while others are over 40. Most are unskilled laborers who applied for jobs at the factory because it's close to home, making commuting easier and allowing them to care for their families.

It is understood that the workers employed in waste sorting are all employed under contracts signed by the factory and are guaranteed full benefits in accordance with the Labor Law. Therefore, their livelihoods are secure, and they can work with peace of mind.

During the work process, the women all have to wear protective gear to avoid danger from sharp pieces of waste. Each person is also assigned to sort and separate different types of waste.

"Despite the challenging work, when they arrive at the workplace, the women understand and support each other. They treat each other like family, creating joy for themselves both at work and in their lives," shared the leader of the Ninh Binh Solid Waste Treatment Plant.
