This morning (August 19), many primary schools in Ho Chi Minh City organized a school opening ceremony to welcome first graders. The students have a week to get used to the routine and learning environment before officially starting the new school year 2024-2025.

Coming to a new school for the first time, first graders have many different emotions. Some are happy and excited, but some are also shy and cry.

Arriving at school early, Huynh Ngoc Bao Tran, class 1/2, Phan Van Tri Primary School (District 1, HCMC) was welcomed by her teacher, took pictures and shown to her seat.

Ms. Huynh Thi Hong Tien, Bao Tran's mother, shared that she is eager to go to school every day.

"Every day, my child keeps asking, 'Mom, when will I start first grade?' This morning, he woke up early to prepare his things," Ms. Tien shared.

However, the young mother is still worried that her child will be unfamiliar with the new environment and will cry and want to go home, so she has talked to her child a lot in the past few days.

The students of class 1/3 of teacher Le Thi Yen came in large numbers on the first day of school. They quickly integrated into the games and activities organized by her. However, some students were still unfamiliar, sobbing, even hiding under the desk.

Ms. Yen gently went to each student to get to know them and comfort them. Wiping away the tears of a little girl who burst into tears because she missed her mother, the teacher gently said: "Be good, promise me you won't cry anymore. Here, I and my friends are here. Mom will pick you up later, don't worry... Let's all say "yeah" together."

To "lure" a little boy who kept hiding under the table, the young teacher organized games and talked to help the boy forget his fear.

Teacher Yen confided that every time she welcomes first graders to the beginning of the school year, teachers prepare for situations where some children will be surprised, unfamiliar, or even cry and want to go home.

"Each child has their own psychology. Children who are in the arms of their parents will be very confused when going to a new school, new class, new teacher, new friends. Therefore, we always care and listen to the children's opinions to have support, together with parents to help children go to class better," said teacher Le Thi Yen.

To help the children adapt quickly, Ms. Yen had previously contacted the parents to ask for pictures of the children, learned each child's name, cared for them and talked to them regularly. Teacher Le Thi Kieu Nhi, homeroom teacher of class 1/4, also spent a lot of time getting to know each child.

Ms. Nhi said that in the first days, the children will not be able to get into a routine because at preschool they mainly play and cannot concentrate much. Through each familiarization activity in class, the teacher will guide the children into a routine.

According to teachers, in order for children to adapt faster, in addition to teachers' efforts, parents should also spend more time caring for their children, introducing them to activities in elementary school, and creating a bond between children, parents, and the school.

Ms. Pham Thi Hue, Vice Principal of Phan Van Tri Primary School, said that this school year, the school welcomed 97 first graders, divided into 4 classes. In addition to preparing good facilities, the school also created a fun space for the children.

On the first day of school, many activities are organized such as interacting with clowns, giving gifts to children, STEM and English games...

In the 2 weeks before the opening day, the children get to know the new school, their homeroom teacher and friends, visit the functional classrooms, prepare books and get used to the routine.

The school also organizes a meeting with parents at the beginning of the year, introducing educational activities and experiences that will be implemented for students.

On the same day, many schools in Ho Chi Minh City also welcomed first graders to school.

At Dinh Cong Trang Primary School (Binh Tan District), parents brought their children to school early, and teachers were ready for the new school year. This is the first year Dinh Cong Trang Primary School welcomed students back to school.

Ms. Le Ngoc Moi, the school's principal, said that the whole school has more than 650 students, with 3 classes of 120 students in grade 1 alone. The school has just been completed and handed over with 28 classrooms and many newly invested functional rooms to serve the 2024-2025 school year.

According to the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, in the 2024-2025 school year, the city will have about 1.7 million students, an increase of more than 24,000 students compared to the previous school year. Primary school has the largest number of students, more than 626,000 students. Compared to the 2023-2024 school year, the number of primary school students decreased by about 6,100 students. Of which, Ho Chi Minh City will welcome about 100,000 first graders.
