Recently, in an interview, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said that tensions between Moscow and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are unlikely to ease.

Sputnik news agency on October 8 quoted Mr. Grushko as emphasizing: "How can we talk about reducing tensions when NATO's strategic documents identify Russia as 'the most direct and significant threat to the security of the alliance's member states'?"

In addition, Russian diplomats accused NATO, through military buildup, of preparing to "confront our country".

For years, Moscow has opposed NATO's continued expansion and military buildup near Russia's borders. In a recent interview, Deputy Foreign Minister Grushko reiterated that the security situation would be different without the organization's expansion.

The US is using the “threat from the Eastern flank” to bring Europe into the world order and maintain Washington’s global hegemony, the Russian official said, stressing that talks on Kiev’s irreversible move toward NATO membership are necessary to maintain Ukraine as a spearhead in the hybrid war against Moscow.

Mr. Grushko believes that people in the West regret that NATO rejected Russia's draft treaty on security guarantees, which was delivered to the military alliance's headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, in December 2021.

Regarding Russia's preparations to update its nuclear doctrine, the diplomat said the reason for this move is to keep opponents from having any illusions about Moscow's readiness to ensure security by all available means.

“We take into account all factors affecting our strategic stability, security and defense capabilities,” Deputy Minister Grushko stressed.

According to him, “the nuclear countries in NATO and the bloc itself, which has declared itself a nuclear alliance, are following the path of increasing the role of nuclear weapons in the alliance's strategy” in both political and military-technical terms.

Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the update of amendments to the nuclear doctrine, stating that Moscow reserves the right to use nuclear weapons in case of invasion, even if the enemy uses conventional weapons but poses a serious threat to the country's national sovereignty.
