(CLO) Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and US President Donald Trump had a phone call on February 1 to discuss the situation in Gaza, Egypt's role as a mediator in the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, as well as the prospects for long-term peace in the region.

Both leaders stressed the importance of continuing to fully implement all phases of the ceasefire agreement, sponsored by Egypt, the United States and Qatar, to maintain stability in Gaza.

One of the focuses of the discussion was to increase humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, which is facing a severe crisis after months of conflict.

Mr. Al-Sisi stressed that a lasting peace solution was needed, not just a temporary ceasefire. He expressed hope for Mr. Trump’s role in reaching a historic agreement that could end the long-running conflict between Israel and Palestine.

The Egyptian president also congratulated Mr. Trump on his second term and invited him to visit Egypt to discuss regional issues and bilateral strategic relations. Mr. Trump reciprocated by inviting Mr. Al-Sisi to Washington to continue negotiations on common issues between the two countries.

In addition to Gaza, the two leaders also discussed bilateral relations, including increased economic cooperation and investment between the United States and Egypt. They also touched on water security issues, particularly the dispute over the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam – a project that Egypt has long opposed due to concerns about its impact on the Nile River.

Both presidents agreed to continue close communication, enhance coordination and hold meetings between officials of the two countries to strengthen strategic relations as well as promote peace and stability in the Middle East region.

The call came amid Mr Trump's recent proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to Jordan and Egypt, a controversial idea that has been widely opposed in the region.

Mr Al-Sisi has rejected the plan, calling it an "unjust act" and insisting that Egypt will not participate in any move to force Palestinians to leave their homeland.
