The US National Security Council issued a statement after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an updated version of Russia's nuclear doctrine on November 19.

"As we said this month, we were not surprised by Russia's announcement that it would update its nuclear doctrine. Russia has been signaling its intention to update its nuclear doctrine for weeks," the US National Security Council stressed in a statement on November 19, according to Reuters.

"Having observed no changes to Russia's nuclear posture, we see no reason to adjust our nuclear posture or doctrine in response to Russia's statements today (November 19)," the US National Security Council said.

The updated version of the Russian nuclear doctrine signed by President Putin on November 19 is called "Foundations of the state policy of the Russian Federation in the field of nuclear deterrence," according to Sputnik News Agency.

According to the new version, preventing potential enemies from invading Russia and its allies is one of the country's top priorities, and aggression by any country from a military alliance against Russia or its allies is considered an aggression by the entire alliance.

The updated doctrine states that any attack by a non-nuclear power supported by a nuclear power will be considered a joint attack, and any attack by one member of a military bloc will be considered an attack by the entire alliance.

Russia has warned the West for months that if Washington allows Ukraine to launch missiles supplied by the US, UK and France deep into Russian territory, Moscow will consider those NATO member states to be direct parties to the conflict in Ukraine, according to Reuters.

Speaking at the US Congress on November 19, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga called on Ukraine's Western allies to "stay awake and not succumb to fear" in the face of what he called Russia's "threat" of nuclear weapons, according to AFP.

There is currently no information about Russia's reaction to the above statement of the US National Security Council as well as Mr. Sybiga's statement.
