Yen Bai Mu Cang Chai and Thac Ba Lake are oriented to invest and build on a large scale, creating a prominent brand with widespread influence, aiming to become a national tourist area.
The Yen Bai planning for the period 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister on September 18 sets out the orientation to focus on attracting investment, building two large-scale tourist areas with outstanding brands, creating a spillover effect for the province's tourism development, including the Thac Ba Lake national tourist area and the Mu Cang Chai national tourist area.
According to the planning approval decision, signed by Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha, the two above-mentioned tourist areas are oriented to "ensure national tourist area standards and criteria".
According to the Law on Tourism, a national tourist area must have at least two tourism resources, including national-level tourism resources; have establishments providing food, shopping, sports, entertainment, recreation, and health care services that meet tourist service standards, serving at least 500,000 visitors per year; a tourist accommodation system that serves at least 300,000 visitors per year, with tourist accommodation facilities rated 4 stars or higher.
Mu Cang Chai is located in the west of Yen Bai, with an average altitude of 1,000 m above sea level, with a fresh climate and great potential for minerals and natural landscapes. However, the infrastructure of this area is slow to develop due to the fragmented terrain and the low number of accommodation facilities.
In 2022, Mu Cang Chai will welcome 350,000 visitors, 104 homestays and motels capable of serving over 3,000 people at the same time; 70 restaurants, eateries and homestays can meet the dining needs of over 5,000 guests.
Currently, the country has 7 national tourist areas, including: Tuyen Lam Lake (Lam Dong), Sa Pa (Lao Cai), Sam Mountain (An Giang), Tra Co (Quang Ninh), Mui Ne (Binh Thuan), Hung Temple (Phu Tho), Tam Dao (Vinh Phuc).
In addition, the planning outlines investment orientations for the development of provincial-level tourist areas in Yen Bai, including Suoi Giang (Van Chan district); Tram Tau (Tram Tau district); Van Yen (Van Yen district); Van Hoi lake (Tran Yen district); Nghia Lo (Nghia Lo town).
In the eastern economic region, Thac Ba lake area is the tourist center of the midland and mountainous region of the North.

The western economic zone of the province (Nghia Lo town, Van Chan district, Mu Cang Chai, Tram Tau) is invested to become an economic driving center. A new road connecting Mu Cang Chai district with Noi Bai - Lao Cai highway will be built. Mu Cang Chai is oriented to become a tourist district.
