Recently, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations agency, proposed a plan to eliminate boarding passes and check-in procedures at airports within the next three years.
Instead of having to carry identification documents as before, passengers only need a “digital travel certificate” on their mobile phones. This “digital travel certificate” includes passport and flight information.
When checking in, passengers only need to step through the facial recognition machine or scan a barcode to complete.
There are concerns that personal information will be exposed when scanning barcodes or facial recognition.
Responding to the issue, ICAO experts said that any recorded data will be deleted from the computer system after 15 seconds, to prevent any breach of personal information.
In addition, boarding passes will be issued as non-physical cards on mobile phones.
Thus, passengers no longer have to present their boarding pass to security and present their passport at the check-in counter as they do now.
This will help passengers no longer have to fumble around looking for boarding passes before each flight, or frantically check in before each flight.
Aviation experts predict the changes will significantly shorten the security screening process at airports.
However, passengers still have to go through general security checks at airport security screening gates, and still have to wait in line to check in their luggage as usual.
The improvements are the biggest change in 50 years, Valérie Viale, director of travel technology company Amadeus, told the Times .
On the other hand, to be able to apply this technology, airports must upgrade their infrastructure, including facial recognition technology and passport reading equipment from mobile devices.
