According to the report of the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), in June 2024, Vietnam's cassava and cassava product exports continued to decrease compared to the same period in 2023, but the decrease was lower than the previous month.
Statistics from the General Department of Customs show that in June 2024, Vietnam exported 141,220 tons of cassava and cassava products, worth 68.24 million USD, up 19.2% in volume and 31.7% in value compared to May 2024.
In the first 6 months of 2024, the export of cassava and cassava products reached 1.38 million tons, worth 630.29 million USD, down 7.7% in volume, but up 6.2% in value over the same period in 2023, due to increased export prices.
Accordingly, in June 2024, the average export price of cassava and cassava products was at 483.2 USD/ton, up 10.5% compared to May 2024 and up 4.4% compared to June 2023. In the first 6 months of 2024, the average export price of cassava and cassava products reached 454.7 USD/ton, up 15% over the same period in 2023.
According to the Import-Export Department, in June 2024, China was still the largest export market for cassava and cassava products of Vietnam, accounting for 87.88% in volume and 88.52% in value of the total export of cassava and cassava products of the whole country, with 124,110 tons, worth 60.4 million USD.

In the first 6 months of 2024, Vietnam exported 1.26 million tons of cassava and cassava products to China, worth 569.05 million USD, down 6.1% in volume, but up 8.9% in value over the same period in 2023.
Notably, according to the Import-Export Department, a market in the Southeast Asian region is showing signs of increasing purchases of cassava and cassava products from Vietnam. Specifically, in June 2024, cassava and cassava products exports to Malaysia increased sharply compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 1,270 tons, worth 656,250 USD, up 1,643% in volume and 2,049% in value compared to June 2023.
In the first 6 months of 2024, Vietnam exported 10,920 tons of cassava and cassava products to Malaysia, worth 5.74 million USD, up 69.6% in volume and 79.2% in value over the same period in 2023.
The Import-Export Department stated that although the volume of cassava exports decreased, the export of cassava and cassava products to the market still grew well in both volume and value compared to the same period in 2023, notably markets such as Taiwan and Malaysia.
However, China is still the largest export market for cassava and cassava products from Vietnam. According to statistics from the Chinese Customs Administration, in the first 5 months of 2024, China imported 1.2 million tons of cassava chips, worth 314.98 million USD. Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are the 4 markets supplying cassava chips to China.
In the first 5 months of 2024, Vietnam was the second largest supplier of cassava chips to China, reaching 271,810 tons, worth 71.09 million USD, down 38.5% in volume and 40.9% in value compared to the same period in 2023.
Vietnam's cassava chip market share accounts for 22.58% of China's total cassava chip imports, higher than the 12.25% level in the first 5 months of 2023.
Regarding cassava starch products, in the first 5 months of 2024, China imported 1.56 million tons of cassava starch, worth 840.91 million USD, up 14.2% in volume and 30.3% in value over the same period in 2023, mainly imported from Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Indonesia. Thailand is the largest market supplying cassava starch to China, while Vietnam is the second largest market supplying cassava starch to China, with 576,580 tons, worth 301.2 million USD, up 23.8% in volume and 43.3% in value over the same period in 2023.
Vietnam's cassava starch market share accounts for 36.86% of China's total cassava starch imports, higher than the 34.0% level in the first 5 months of 2023.
In the first 5 months of 2024, China also increased its imports of cassava starch from Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Brazil. The market share of cassava starch from Laos, Cambodia, and Indonesia in China's total imports all increased sharply compared to the same period in 2023.
"In the Chinese market, Vietnamese cassava and tapioca starch are facing strong competition from those of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Indonesia. Therefore, Vietnamese enterprises need to pay attention to product quality to maintain exports and maintain market share in this market," the Import-Export Department recommended.
