Statistics from the Chinese Customs Department show that last July, the country spent 145.1 million USD to import nearly 289.2 thousand tons of cassava starch (HS code 11081400), up 66.3% in volume and 55.9% in value compared to the same month last year.
This is also the 5th consecutive month that China's cassava starch imports have increased compared to the same period in 2023.
In the first 7 months of 2024, China imported 2.05 million tons of cassava starch, worth up to 1.08 billion USD, up 21.8% in volume and 33.7% in value over the same period last year. Of which, imports were mainly from Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Indonesia.
Thailand was the largest supplier of tapioca starch to China in the first 7 months of this year. Specifically, China imported nearly 955.9 thousand tons of tapioca starch from Thailand, worth 525.5 million USD, up slightly by 3.8% in volume and 13.4% in value over the same period in 2023.
Thailand's tapioca starch market share accounted for 46.6% of China's total imports, lower than the 54.69% in the same period last year.
Vietnam is the second largest supplier of cassava starch to China, reaching 762.72 thousand tons, worth over 393.2 million USD. Compared to the same period last year, this white starch exported to China increased by 40% in volume and increased sharply by 56% in value.
Vietnam's cassava starch market share accounts for 37.2% of China's total imports, higher than the 32.35% of the first 7 months of 2023.
In addition, China also increased imports of cassava starch from Laos, Cambodia and Brazil, while reducing imports from Indonesia.
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in the past 8 months, our country's cassava and cassava products exports reached 1.79 million tons, earning 822.7 million USD; although down 3.8% in volume, it increased 7% in value compared to the same period last year.
The average export price of cassava and cassava products in the first 8 months of this year reached 458.1 USD/ton, up 11.3% over the same period in 2023.
Regarding the export market, China still buys up to 92% of the total volume of cassava and cassava products of our country. Accordingly, this billion-people country spent about 751 million USD to buy 1.65 million tons, down 2.2% in volume but up 9.3% in value compared to the same period last year.
The main types of cassava and cassava products exported from Vietnam in the past 8 months were cassava starch and dried cassava chips. Of which, cassava starch exports tended to increase in both volume and value compared to the same period in 2023.
