The Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said that in July 2024, the export of cassava and cassava products increased again, after many consecutive months of decline. According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in July 2024, Vietnam exported 218,530 tons of cassava and cassava products, worth 105.67 million USD, up 54.7% in volume and 54.9% in value compared to June 2024.

In the first 7 months of 2024, cassava and cassava products exports reached 1.6 million tons, worth 735.95 million USD, down 2.5% in volume, but up 10.6% in value over the same period in 2023, thanks to increased export prices.

Regarding export prices, in July 2024, the average export price of cassava and cassava products was 483.6 USD/ton, up 0.1% compared to June 2024, but still down 2.4% compared to July 2023. In the first 7 months of 2024, the average export price of cassava and cassava products reached 458.6 USD/ton, up 13.4% over the same period in 2023.

In July 2024, China was still the largest export market for cassava and cassava products of Vietnam, accounting for 95.3% in volume and 94.36% in value of the total export of cassava and cassava products of the whole country, with 208,260 tons, worth 99.71 million USD.

In the first 7 months of 2024, Vietnam exported nearly 1.47 million tons of cassava and cassava products to China, worth 668.76 million USD, an increase of 13.5% in value over the same period in 2023.

In the first 7 months of 2024, Vietnam exported nearly 1.47 million tons of cassava and cassava products to China.

Vietnam's cassava and cassava products exported in the first 7 months of 2024 were mainly cassava starch and dried cassava chips. Of which, cassava starch exports reached 1.27 million tons, worth 649.18 million USD, up 22.5% in volume and 31% in value over the same period in 2023.

Meanwhile, dried cassava chip exports reached 334,190 tons, worth 86.7 million USD, down 44.3% in volume and 47.9% in value over the same period in 2023.

According to the Import-Export Department, China is still the largest and most important export market for cassava and cassava products from Vietnam. However, in the first 6 months of 2024, China's imports of cassava chips decreased sharply due to a decrease in demand for cassava chips from factories. In addition, low corn prices caused factories to increase the rate of corn used instead of cassava chips. Meanwhile, imports of cassava starch into China increased compared to the same period in 2023.

According to statistics from the China Customs Administration, in the first 6 months of 2024, China imported 1.48 million tons of cassava chips, worth 382.99 million USD, down 64.3% in volume and 66.5% in value compared to the same period in 2023. Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia are the main markets supplying cassava chips to China. Notably, the amount of cassava chips imported by China from Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos decreased sharply, while imports from Cambodia increased sharply compared to the same period in 2023.

In the first 6 months of 2024, Vietnam was the second largest supplier of cassava chips to China, with 279,000 tons of cassava chips, worth 72.92 million USD.

For cassava starch products, China's cassava starch imports have increased continuously since February 2024. In the first 6 months of 2024, China imported 1.76 million tons of cassava starch, worth 942.66 million USD, up 16.7% in volume and 30.8% in value over the same period in 2023, mainly imported from Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Indonesia.

Of which, Thailand is the largest market supplying cassava starch to China in the first 6 months of 2024. In the first 6 months of 2024, China imported 821,120 tons of cassava starch from Thailand, worth 456.36 million USD, down 0.7% in volume, but up 10.9% in value compared to the same period in 2023. Thailand's cassava starch market share in China's total imports accounted for 46.61%, lower than the 54.75% in the first 6 months of 2023.

In the first 6 months of 2024, Vietnam was the second largest market supplying cassava starch to China, with 638,980 tons, worth nearly 331.95 million USD, up 28.4% in volume and 46.2% in value over the same period in 2023. Vietnam's cassava starch market share accounted for 36.27% of China's total cassava starch imports, higher than the 32.96% level in the first 6 months of 2023.

The Import-Export Department stated that China tends to reduce imports of cassava starch from Thailand and Indonesia; while increasing imports from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. However, in the Chinese market, cassava and cassava starch from Vietnam are competing with cassava and cassava starch from Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia.

According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), since the beginning of August 2024, a number of large cassava starch factories in the Central and Central Highlands regions have resumed operations with new crop raw material purchase prices fluctuating at VND2,900-3,100/kg. However, cassava starch transactions remain quiet due to weak new purchase demand from China.

Currently, the export price of cassava starch offered by Vietnamese factories is at 480-505 USD/ton, FOB Ho Chi Minh City port, down 10 USD/ton compared to the end of last month. The export price of cassava starch through Lang Son and Mong Cai border gates is also on a downward trend, fluctuating at 3,520-3,640 CNY/ton, down 60 CNY/ton compared to the end of last month.
