Speaking to the press before the visit, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang commented that the state visit to Vietnam by King Philippe and Queen Mathilde is a "special visit, of great significance to the relationship between the two countries".

The visit shows the special affection of the King and Queen of Belgium for Vietnam, because in the past, when they were still the Crown Prince and Princess, they had visited the S-shaped land many times and had many memories and feelings after each trip.

"The King and Queen's state visit to Vietnam, in the context that the Belgian King rarely makes official trips to countries outside of Europe during the year, shows Belgium's special respect for Vietnam and Vietnam's role and position in the Asia-Pacific region," Ms. Hang affirmed.

According to the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the visit affirms the desire and determination of both sides to bring bilateral relations to new heights, including further increasing political trust and promoting cooperation in many fields, especially economics, trade and investment.

This is also an opportunity for the two sides to continue to deepen the Vietnam - Belgium Strategic Partnership on Agriculture established by the two countries in 2018. At the same time, expand cooperation in other priority and potential areas such as education - training, science - technology, culture - arts.

Sharing more, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang said that the King and Queen of Belgium are expected to be accompanied by 34 CEOs of leading corporations and large enterprises of Belgium and the EU in the fields of logistics services, seaports, energy transition, climate change response, healthcare, food, etc.

There are also 16 leaders of leading Belgian universities and research institutes.

"This demonstrates Belgium's desire to work with Vietnam to strengthen existing cooperation foundations, while seeking and exploring new cooperation opportunities in potential areas where Belgium has strengths and Vietnam has needs," Ms. Hang affirmed.

Belgian King and Queen visit Vietnam for 5 days

According to a previous announcement from the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the invitation of President Luong Cuong and his wife, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde will pay a state visit to Vietnam from March 31 to April 4.

This is the first state visit by the King and Queen of Belgium. As Crown Prince, King Philippe visited Vietnam in 1993, 2003 and 2012.

Queen Mathilde visited Vietnam in 2012 as Princess of Belgium with Crown Prince Philippe. In 2023, she returned to our country as Honorary President of UNICEF Belgium.

The Kingdom of Belgium was one of the first Western countries to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam in 1973. Two years later, Belgium opened an embassy in Hanoi and appointed a permanent ambassador from June 1976.
