US President Donald Trump said diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine were making progress, but warned that the sides remained deeply at odds.

Speaking to reporters on March 28, the US leader stressed his desire to end the fighting, claiming that Ukraine and Russia are "losing 2,500 young people a week."

“I think we are making progress, but there is still a lot of bad blood between the parties,” he said.

Mr. Trump did not give a specific basis for the 2,500 figure, did not specify whether this number included deaths or injuries. The US President also did not specify how many Russian and Ukrainian troops lost out of the total 2,500.

US Vice President JD Vance also emphasized this point during a visit to Greenland, stating: "We have clearly achieved a ceasefire on energy infrastructure between Russia and Ukraine, we are close to finalizing a trade ceasefire in the Black Sea, and once we achieve that, we will move on to the next phase of the ceasefire."

The comments come amid intense talks between Russia and the United States aimed at restoring bilateral relations and ending the fighting between Moscow and Kiev. On March 18, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed a potential ceasefire and agreed to a 30-day halt to attacks on energy infrastructure.

However, Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused each other of violating this agreement.

Moscow has said it will abide by the ceasefire but warned that it could respond in kind if Kiev continues to violate the agreement.

Additional talks between Russian and US delegations took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia this week, with discussions focusing on reviving the 2022 grain deal that guarantees Ukraine’s food exports across the Black Sea.

While Moscow agreed to this in principle, it would only accept a maritime ceasefire if the West lifted sanctions on the Russian Agricultural Bank and other financial institutions involved in the sale of food and fertilizers, and reconnected them to the SWIFT payment system.

However, the European Union (EU) has rejected this request, asserting that sanctions will remain in place until Russia withdraws its troops from all territories claimed by Ukraine.

Accordingly, the European Commission's Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Ms. Anitta Hipper, emphasized that "the EU's main priority remains to increase maximum pressure on Russia using all available tools".

President Trump has repeatedly stated that he believes peace can be achieved in Ukraine, referring to US dialogue with Russia and Ukraine.

Mr. Trump believes that Russia must also make certain concessions to end the conflict. Mr. Trump asserted that if he had not been elected President of the United States, the war in Ukraine "would have dragged on."
