In the winter crop production structure, cold-loving plants also play an important role, accounting for more than 30% of the total crop area (more than 8,000 hectares) as planned, with vegetables, tubers, and fruits serving the market demand at the end of the year. To meet the large consumption demand during the Lunar New Year, localities in Ha Nam province are currently focusing on expanding the planting area on both specialized land and rice land.

Corn is the second largest food crop after rice. In the agricultural restructuring program and crop conversion, corn is given top priority.

Corn is not only easy to grow and has high yield potential, but its products are also the main raw material for processing animal feed. In fact, winter corn is currently in a good growth and development period, reaching about 7-9 leaves (after about 1 month of planting). However, in some localities, some farmers have not followed the correct technical process, especially fertilization, leading to stunted and slow-growing plants.

At this time, households in Tam village, Liem Can commune, Thanh Liem district, Ha Nam province are urgently preparing the land and planting water celery. This is also a typical late winter crop in low-lying areas, and farmers in the commune have maintained production for over 10 years.

Ms. Nguyen Thi T, a resident of Tam village, said: “The end of October is the most suitable time to plant celery because celery prefers cold weather. Celery is easy to grow and easy to care for; after just over 1 month of planting, the first harvest can be harvested and the crop can be extended to early spring. The value obtained from celery is not inferior to any other winter crop, reaching an average of 6-7 million VND/sao.”

This winter crop, the area for growing cold-loving crops continues to be expanded by people in Liem Can commune to about 13 hectares, an increase of 3 hectares compared to the previous winter crop. The crops are quite diverse, including potatoes, celery, beans, etc.

The main crops produced in the winter crop are vegetables (nearly 210 hectares) and potatoes (about 32 hectares), concentrated in Thanh Hai, Thanh Nghi, Liem Can and Thanh Tan communes. These are the main vegetable production areas supplying the area, especially for workers in industrial parks and clusters.

Ms. Do Thi Thanh Nga - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Thanh Liem district said that the progress of planting cold-loving winter crops in the district is being ensured. It is expected that the winter crop area this year will be expanded by 10-15% compared to the plan.

For Kim Bang district, the area for growing cold-loving crops in the winter crop has reached nearly 250 hectares. Binh Luc district has expanded winter crop cultivation in communes with advantages along the Chau River, with more than 400 hectares, accounting for over 40% of the total crop area.

Ly Nhan district has deployed winter crop production in most communes and towns with a variety of varieties, from cauliflower, cabbage, tomatoes, kohlrabi to short-term leafy vegetables. Many communes have formed large-scale vegetable production areas in the late winter crop, such as Nguyen Ly and Hoa Hau communes, each with 30 hectares; Nhan Tien Agricultural Cooperative (Tien Thang) has 70 hectares; Nhan Nghia commune has more than 60 hectares; Nhan Chinh has nearly 50 hectares.

In the whole Ly Nhan district, the winter crop area this year is estimated at about 600 hectares, an increase of more than 80 hectares compared to the previous winter crop.

Discussing the production of cold-loving winter crops in the province this year, Mr. Nguyen Hai Nam - Head of the Department of Cultivation, Plant Protection and Forestry (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) said: “The winter crop planting season is about 1 month away. Therefore, the production area is likely to increase by 10-15% over the plan. This is the condition to compensate for the low area and value of some warm-loving crops. The production value of winter crops has been proven to average 7-10 million VND/sao/crop, sometimes up to 15 million VND/sao/crop.”

Currently, the weather is very favorable for the winter crop production process in general. In order for winter crops to be highly effective, people need to pay attention to care, pest control, and apply safe production methods. Thereby, helping crops achieve both productivity and product quality for the market.
