At the end of last year, in Quang Ninh and Le Thuy districts (Quang Binh), there was a major flood. Farmers hoped that after the flood, the pest situation in the fields would decrease significantly. However, in the winter-spring crop of 2024 - 2025, during the stage of strong rice growth and tillering, pests and diseases appeared, affecting the growth and development of rice.

According to the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Quang Binh, the early winter-spring rice crop is currently in the tillering and panicle formation stages; the main crop is in the tillering stage; the late crop is in the tillering stage, and many areas are damaged by pests and diseases. As of early April, the whole province had nearly 1,500 hectares of rice infected with pests and diseases. Of which, the pests and diseases with large areas of infection include small leaf roller (400 hectares), rice blast (340 hectares), bacterial streak (220 hectares) ...

According to Mr. Nguyen Huong Lien, Deputy Head of the Quang Binh Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, in the coming time, rats, rice blast disease, leaf rollers, brown planthoppers, etc. will continue to cause damage. Therefore, the Department has requested localities to direct farmers to regularly visit fields and detect pests early to take timely control measures.

In early April, the weather conditions were very favorable for the outbreak of rice blast disease. In Le Thuy, Quang Ninh and Minh Hoa districts, some rice fields were burned due to leaf blast disease. "We recommend that these localities direct specialized units to send staff to regularly monitor the base to check and detect early so that timely prevention measures can be taken according to the Department's instructions," said Mr. Lien.

This spring crop, Quang Ninh district planted more than 5,200 hectares of rice. Currently, the main crop is in the stage of standing and forming panicles, while the late crop is actively tillering. Due to the influence of the weather, fog in the morning and evening, high humidity has caused many types of pests to arise and cause damage.

Currently, in the district, there are more than 330 hectares of rice affected by pests (infected with brown spot, leaf blast, white-backed planthopper...) and rats. The rice areas affected by pests and rats are most concentrated in the communes of Tan Ninh, Vinh Ninh, An Ninh, Truong Xuan...

In order for rice plants to grow well and minimize damage caused by rats and pests, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Ninh district has directed localities to increase field inspections, proactively detect and promptly control pests.

According to Mr. Tran Van Trung, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Ninh district, the force of specialized staff has been strengthened to support local authorities and farmers in using the right type of pesticides, in the right dosage, and at the right time to effectively control pests and diseases.

“We proactively and actively check, plan, forecast in a timely manner and guide people on measures to prevent pests and diseases to limit widespread spread,” said Mr. Trung.

In the communes of Mai Thuy, Xuan Thuy, Phu Thuy, Tan Thuy, Thai Thuy, An Thuy, Truong Thuy, Son Thuy... (Le Thuy district), leaf blast disease has appeared with an infected area of over 100 hectares. The common damage rate is from 10 - 15%, locally 30 - 50% and there has been cluster burn in the fields. The disease appears mainly on varieties P6, QC03, Xuan Mai, HN6, PC6, Du Huong 8... In addition, the rice area damaged by rats has also increased rapidly compared to last winter-spring crop.

According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Han, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Le Thuy district, the locality is planning to support more than 500 million VND of rat poison for localities to implement timely and effective rat control. At the same time, localities direct farmers to regularly check their fields, grasp the situation of the emergence and damage of pests on crops to have timely prevention measures; focus on preventing rats, leaf blast disease on main-season tea and thrips on late-sown tea.
