Mitsubishi Triton accelerates but Ford Ranger is still the "king"

(CLO) The transformation of the new generation has just helped Mitsubishi Triton complete a spectacular acceleration in September. However, the distance to the "king" Ford Ranger is still far away.

According to a report by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), 360 Mitsubishi Tritons were sold in the market in September 2024. This number is more than 4 times higher than the previous month.

Triton's acceleration is largely due to the transformation of the pickup truck that once took the market by storm. The new generation Mitsubishi Triton was officially launched in the Vietnamese market in early September with 3 versions. Of which, the 4x2 AT GLX version has a retail price of 655 million VND, the 4x2 AT Premium version costs 782 million VND and the 4x4 AT Athlete version costs 924 million VND. This price of Triton 2024 is 5-19 million VND higher than the previous generation.

Before launching the new generation, Triton and its compatriot Isuzu D-Max had the "softest" retail price range in the pickup truck segment. Competitors Ford Ranger cost 665 million VND - 1.039 billion VND, Toyota Hilux cost 668 - 999 million VND, Nissan Narava cost 685 - 960 million VND, Isuzu D-Max cost 650 - 880 million VND. However, the clumsy design and poor technology are the weaknesses that often cause both models to fall into a state of stagnation.

Mitsubishi Triton 2024 has completely changed from appearance, interior design to technological equipment for users. This is the reason why Triton is chosen by more consumers. Also thanks to the acceleration in September, Mitsubishi Triton has significantly expanded its cumulative market share in the first 9 months of 2024.

Ford Ranger still firmly holds the "throne" in the pickup segment, accounting for 78% of the cumulative market share in the first 9 months of 2024.

According to VAMA's report, in the first 9 months of 2024, Ford Ranger still firmly holds the "throne" in the pickup segment with 11,766 vehicles delivered to consumers. Mitsubishi Triton finished in second place with 1,641 vehicles. Toyota Hilux ranked 3rd with a total of 1,333 vehicles sold to the market. Isuzu D-Max is still lagging behind with only 341 vehicles delivered to customers.

Coming in last place is the Mazda BT-50 with sales of only 5 units in the entire 9-month period. The reason is that this model has been temporarily stopped being assembled and distributed by Thaco Group. According to research, it is likely that the Mazda BT-50 will soon return to the market with a completely new look.

The pickup truck segment in the Vietnamese auto market has another model, the Nissan Navara. However, the Japanese automaker has not released detailed sales reports.

Along with B-class SUVs and small MPVs, pickups are also a popular car segment among Vietnamese consumers. However, with a huge gap, Ford Ranger will still be the “king” of the segment despite the efforts of its competitors.
