Studying at university but still worried about "where to get money for school"
Vang Thi Lia is a Mong ethnic, living in Lung Pu commune (Meo Vac district), this year she became a new student majoring in English (Thai Nguyen University of Science). Living far from home, she has to pay for everything, but each month Lia's parents can only save and borrow a maximum of 1 million VND to send to their child, the average is 500,000 VND, sometimes only 300,000 - 400,000 VND.
Vang Thi Lia shares her feelings when receiving financial support for university studies to return to work as a teacher in her hometown of Meo Vac.
During the first months away from home, unable to do any extra work, Lia confided that she often felt confused, not knowing if she could continue to "stick around" to study and graduate...
Chao Thi Xuan, a Dao ethnic, from Xin Cai Commune (Meo Vac District), confided: "I am the 7th child in a family of 9 siblings; my father passed away early, and now my mother is the only one farming to raise the children. When I passed the university entrance exam, the eldest sister in the family, even though she was married, still encouraged me to go to school and supported me with 2 million VND per month from her already very limited salary as a preschool teacher."
That is the story of 2 out of 9 ethnic minority students from Meo Vac District who returned to Hanoi on November 25 to attend the signing ceremony and receive scholarships for the project called "Training English teachers for Meo Vac District" in which Marie Curie School is the "investor".
Chao Thi Xuan shared with Thanh Nien reporter that when her sister called to inform her that a benefactor would sponsor at least 5 million VND/month for her to study, she could not believe her ears and was so happy that she cried.
"After finishing school, I will definitely return to Meo Vac to become an English teacher. When I was in high school, because the district did not have teachers, I did not learn English until grade 6. I have always cherished the dream of becoming an English teacher for children in my hometown. Now I have more determination and motivation to make that dream come true," Xuan said.
Vang Thi Lia expressed: "I am very grateful for this project for creating opportunities for us to pursue our dreams, not only helping my family financially but also being a great source of motivation for me to be determined to study, get a good diploma to definitely return to work as a teacher in my hometown Meo Vac".

"I will treat you like my own children"
Teacher Nguyen Xuan Khang, Principal of Marie Curie School, shared that the project of teaching English to Meo Vac students that he and Marie Curie School have been implementing since 2022 will end in 2025, when this generation of students graduate from primary school. "I am wondering how to help Meo Vac find a solution to solve the problem of teachers at the root, instead of having to "eat today's meal and worry about tomorrow's meal" due to the lack of English teachers like now," said Mr. Khang.
Therefore, the Principal of Marie Curie School proposed to Mr. Bui Van Thu, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Meo Vac District, to coordinate to support the training of English teachers for the district in the form of recruitment combined with socialization.
The district will look for local students who are qualified to be admitted to English language universities and arrange for them to teach at schools in the district after graduation. Marie Curie School will support the students with training and accommodation costs.
In the commitment signed by the parties, the minimum support level is 5 million VND/child/month (starting from December this year). This level can increase up to 10 million VND/month, depending on the children's academic performance. This scholarship amount is transferred monthly to the children's accounts.
According to the commitment, Marie Curie School will support the training of 30 teachers for Meo Vac District within the framework of this project; the total estimated cost for the entire project is from 6 to 12 billion VND.
Representatives of Meo Vac District and Marie Curie School signed a commitment to implement the project "Training English teachers for Meo Vac District" under the witness of leaders of the Department of Education and Training of Hanoi and Ha Giang.
Mr. Khang emotionally told the students present at the ceremony: "I hope you will try your best to study to achieve the best results within your ability. After graduating, you will return to your hometown, and together with the current teachers, teach the students of the district. From now on, I will consider you as my own children and it is my responsibility as a father to take care of your children's education. You have become a member of the Marie Curie family."
Mr. Ngo Manh Cuong, Vice Chairman of Meo Vac District People's Committee, said that the district leaders were very pleased and especially appreciated the support of Marie Curie School; committed to fulfilling their responsibilities in proposing the most appropriate list of students to receive scholarships and welcoming and arranging suitable jobs for them when they return after graduation.
Hope to spread the model to help difficult areas reduce difficulties
Witnessing the signing ceremony and listening to the teachers and students' confidences, Mr. Nguyen The Binh, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Giang, expressed his emotion and gratitude for receiving support from a school in Hanoi for the common work of the whole industry. "Mr. Khang recounted the journey of supporting English teachers for Meo Vac in a very simple way, but in fact, it helped solve the most difficult problem for Ha Giang at the beginning of the implementation of the 2018 General Education Program," Mr. Binh emphasized.
Mr. Binh also said that thanks to the model of supporting English teaching for Meo Vac by Marie Curie School, this school year, the Department of Education and Training of Lam Dong and a charity organization in Ho Chi Minh City have known about it and proactively helped teach English to the most difficult areas of Ha Giang.
Certainly in the coming time, the support model of Marie Curie School will be applied and replicated by the government and the education and training sector of Ha Giang to become a policy of the local government, creating a team of teachers who are local people, well-trained to return to continue living and contributing to the locality. "Thus, the sustainability in the development of education in difficult areas like Ha Giang will be realized," said Mr. Binh.
Teacher Nguyen Xuan Khang adopted and treated the students in the project "Training English teachers for Meo Vac district" as "family members".
Mr. Nguyen Quang Tuan, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, shared that the department's leaders have closely followed and highly appreciated the community projects of Marie Curie School for Meo Vac District; especially the project of teaching English to students that the school implemented very effectively in the last school year and the fundamental solution, helping to permanently and permanently solve the upcoming teacher shortage in Meo Vac.
Mr. Tuan believes and hopes that the work of Marie Curie School will contribute to spreading and expanding to other schools in Hanoi, so that many other disadvantaged localities across the country can receive the support and contributions of the community.
