This is a project under the National Target Program for Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2030 period, Phase I from 2021-2025 (National Target Program 1719), with an investment capital of nearly 4 billion VND. Households participating in the project are provided with breeds and are raised according to the techniques and processes that have been trained.
In 2023, Dai An Agricultural, Forestry and Aquaculture Cooperative was established, with the participation of dozens of households in Nam Dan commune, with a scale of raising 16,800 cold-water fish. Since then, the Cooperative has organized 2 training courses on cold-water fish farming techniques in the direction of biosafety for households participating in the Project.
In 2024 alone, the Cooperative will support the consumption of 16,800 cold-water fish and build a product processing facility to further facilitate the development of a new local economic model.
Mr. Vu Thien Ngu, Deputy Director of the Cooperative, said: Sturgeon is very suitable for the water source here, and sturgeon grows steadily. Currently, many households have exported commercial fish. The profits from sturgeon farming of the Cooperative have helped many households have a stable economy. The Cooperative continues to encourage people to develop this model.
Ly Seo Lin's family is one of the pioneers in raising sturgeon in the Dai An Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Cooperative. Previously, the family's upland area at the foot of Deo Gio was used to grow rice for one crop. At the end of 2023, the family joined the Cooperative and converted it into 3 sturgeon farming tanks. After 1 year, each sturgeon weighed an average of 2 to 2.5 kg, with an estimated total output of 5 tons and brought in an income of more than 100 million VND in the first batch.
Mr. Lin shared: “Every year, my family can harvest a large amount of fish, bringing in a stable income. I am very happy because the Project has created conditions for my family to escape poverty.”
One of the highlights of the Project is the branding of sturgeon and processed products such as sturgeon floss and fresh fish meat in trays. This not only helps to increase the value of the product but also expands the consumption market, while creating learning and development opportunities for people in the area. Supporting the construction of preliminary processing and product processing facilities helps to increase the value of cold-water fish farming and promote sustainable development of the local economy.
Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Dan Commune, Lu Van Hien, said: Currently, the whole commune has more than 30 households raising sturgeon. Developing the sturgeon farming model in the commune is a right step. We always encourage households to participate in this model because it not only helps develop the household economy but also contributes to the socio-economic development of the locality.
