It is forecasted that many crop areas will still be at risk of water shortage in the 2024-2025 dry season.
Since the end of February 2025, Long An province has forecasted that in the 2024-2025 dry season, the whole province will have about 23,669 hectares of crop area at risk of being affected by drought, water shortage and saltwater intrusion. The affected areas are mainly winter-spring rice (18,260 hectares), lemon (2,268 hectares), vegetables (469 hectares) and some other crops.
High-risk areas are concentrated in Thu Thua district (7,348.5ha), Thanh Hoa (6,363ha), Tan Thanh (6,182ha). In addition, some crop areas in localities such as Ben Luc, Can Duoc, Tan Tru and Tan An city are also in the forecast area.
To proactively respond to drought and salinity for crops and agricultural production, Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - Nguyen Minh Lam directed sectors and localities to focus on monitoring water quality, measuring salinity on main rivers and canals and promptly warning people to proactively store water; at the same time, organizing inspections of dikes and salinity-preventing sluices, dredging canals and ditches, and building temporary dams in key areas.
The provincial Department of Agriculture recommends that people change the crop structure in places where there is not enough irrigation water, apply water-saving irrigation solutions such as drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation combined with providing nutrients through the irrigation system, use organic fertilizers, and trace elements to increase the ability to withstand drought and salinity. Adjust water supply appropriately when water sources are lacking, ensuring efficiency in production.
For the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring rice area that has been sown, continue to take care of it and monitor the water situation (pay attention to the need for fresh water for irrigation for rice at the heading stage). For areas with insufficient water for irrigation and at risk of drought and saltwater intrusion, farmers are advised not to sow rice, switch to short-term crops, crops that use less irrigation water, and apply advanced, water-saving irrigation solutions to ensure adequate water supply for crops.
For fruit orchards, people need to increase the use of organic fertilizers, potassium sulfate, phosphate, lime powder, etc. to limit poisoning caused by drought and salinity. When drought and salinity last for a long time, use additional foliar fertilizers and preparations containing potassium, calcium, magnesium, and silicon to help plants increase their tolerance to drought and salinity. Do not use fertilizers containing sodium or chlorine because they will increase the toxicity of the plants.
Authorities regularly check the situation of saltwater intrusion on rivers to find solutions for prevention and control and give timely recommendations.
For areas with flowering and fruiting gardens but lacking sufficient irrigation water, it is possible to prune branches, create a compact canopy, trim buds, flowers, and young fruits; at the same time, cover the roots and keep the soil moist with dry leaves, straw, hay, and agricultural by-products to limit evaporation and prevent tree exhaustion. Planting new fruit trees in water-deficient conditions is also not recommended to avoid damage.
Long An province calls on people to closely monitor weather reports, proactively prevent and coordinate with authorities to effectively respond to drought and salinity, use water economically and change crop structure appropriately, ensuring stable production and life in this year's dry season./.
