Environmental engineer leaves city to return to countryside to raise shrimp

Graduated from the Environmental Technology Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, then worked as an environmental engineer for several large enterprises in Ho Chi Minh City and Quang Tri province, but Mr. Tran Van Dung (born in 1985), residing in Phan Hien village, Vinh Son commune, Vinh Linh district, gave up his job in the city to return to his hometown to raise shrimp. Thanks to boldly applying science and technology to production, his 3-phase CPFCombine shrimp farming model has brought high economic efficiency.

Shrimp farming in 3 stages, profit of 1 billion VND/crop

On October 12, 2023, CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company held a ceremony to honor and present gifts to Mr. Tran Van Dung. The 3-phase CPFCombine shrimp farming model of Mr. Dung's family was completed and transferred technology by this company.

In the second crop (ending in August 2023), Mr. Dung harvested about 10 tons of commercial shrimp, size reaching 20 shrimp/kg, net profit over 1 billion VND.

With this achievement, he was recognized by the company and given a Honda Future motorbike worth nearly 40 million VND along with 50,000 shrimp seeds and many gifts of the company's products. After receiving this information from the Chairman of Vinh Son Commune People's Committee Than Trong Dung, I immediately went to Mr. Dung's shrimp farm to "witness"...

Mr. Dung's shrimp farm is located on a 2.5-hectare plot of land. Although I had the opportunity to visit a 3-phase shrimp farm in Gio Linh district a few years ago, if Mr. Dung had not introduced it, I would have hardly imagined that his farm was so large-scale and well-invested. The rough settling ponds, ready ponds, 3-phase shrimp ponds as well as the water treatment system are very scientifically designed.

Taking me on a tour around the facility, Mr. Dung said: “In 2009, I graduated and worked as an environmental engineer for a company in Ho Chi Minh City. After that, I returned to my hometown to work at Cam Lo Rubber Processing Factory - a member of Quang Tri Trading Corporation. At that time, my family had 12 ponds for raising black tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp with an area of 5 hectares, and needed support to expand the area, so in early 2010, I quit my job to help my family.”

After a period of research, in early 2022, Mr. Dung decided to switch from the traditional shrimp farming method to the 3-phase CPFCombine shrimp farming model built and transferred by CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company. On a land fund of 2.5 hectares, he arranged 4 commercial ponds in the form of floating ponds with a total area of about 4,000 m2 , the rest is a wastewater treatment pond, a settling pond and a water treatment system.

All ponds are circular, lined with tarpaulin and equipped with roofs to ensure the most optimal water environment, regardless of the weather. The aeration system is installed synchronously, scientifically and operates continuously to provide enough oxygen for the shrimp and collect waste in the pond into the treatment system. The shrimp farming process is strictly implemented with 3 stages. Each stage has a different implementation method, lasting from 20 - 30 days.

“I raised shrimp and built an infrastructure system to serve production. The project was completed at the beginning of this year with a total investment of about 2.5 billion VND. My 3-phase shrimp farming model has 3 crops per year, each crop lasts from 3 to 4 months.

In the second crop this year, I raised 200,000 shrimp. After nearly 120 days of raising, I harvested about 10 tons of commercial shrimp, about 20 shrimp/kg in size. After deducting all expenses, I earned over 1 billion VND in profit. The third crop just ended last September.

In this crop, I raised 100,000 shrimp. To avoid storms, I shortened the farming period to about 80 days before harvesting, so the shrimp are smaller than in previous crops. With about 3.5 tons of commercial shrimp, I earned about 350 million VND in profit," said Mr. Dung.

According to Mr. Dung, the 3-stage CPF Combine shrimp farming model requires a large initial investment but is more effective than the traditional farming method. The advantage of the CPF Combine model is that farmers can easily control environmental factors and water sources because of the modern water treatment system. The amount of excess food and shrimp loss are also easy to monitor.

All ponds are lined with tarpaulin, have roofs and an oxygen supply system, so the pond environment is always stable during each stage of farming, thereby preventing diseases, improving the health and survival rate of shrimp, and helping shrimp grow quickly.

The 3-stage farming process helps to rotate crops quickly, allowing for multiple crops per year compared to the traditional method. The entire farming process only uses minerals and biological products, and does not use antibiotics.

Breeding animals, food and biological products are provided by CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company. As for the output, Mr. Dung has connections with traders in the Northern region, so it is basically stable.

Family has 2 generations of shrimp farming

It is no coincidence that Mr. Dung has been so successful in raising shrimp. In addition to the experience accumulated during his studies and production, plus the support of science and technology, an important condition is that his family has a fairly solid foundation in shrimp farming. Mr. Tran Van Luu, Mr. Dung's father, has been raising shrimp since 1998 and is one of the first people to raise black tiger shrimp in Vinh Linh district. "My father was a military officer.

During his time in the army, he traveled to many places and saw many people raising tiger shrimp with high economic efficiency, so he cherished the idea of bringing this model back to his hometown to test. Therefore, after being discharged from the army and returning to his hometown, he invested in building ponds to raise tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp. During the farming process, he accumulated capital and bought more land from households in the village to expand the production area. Up to now, my family has 3 shrimp farming areas. Of which, my father, brother and I each have one farming area," Dung shared.

Interestingly, Mr. Dung's older brother, Mr. Tran Van Thong, is also an engineer. Mr. Thong graduated from the Aquaculture Department of Nha Trang University in 2006. After graduating, he returned to his hometown to raise shrimp with his father. Now that he is old, Mr. Dung's father has handed over most of the work to his children, leaving only a small area for shrimp farming.

Mr. Luu currently has 3 shrimp ponds with an area of 1.5 hectares. Mr. Thong has 9 shrimp ponds with an area of 3 hectares. Mr. Dung has 4 ponds with an area of 2.5 hectares. Of these, only Mr. Dung has invested in converting to 3-phase CPF Combine shrimp farming. Mr. Dung's family creates jobs for about 10 local workers. It is known that in Vinh Son commune, there is another household that also raises shrimp according to the 3-phase model but has not achieved as high economic efficiency as Mr. Dung's family.

Chairman of Vinh Son Commune People's Committee Than Trong Dung said that the whole commune has about 166.1 hectares, with a total of 447 shrimp farming households, of which 40 hectares are tiger shrimp and 126.1 hectares are white-leg shrimp. Since the beginning of the year, the complicated weather conditions and polluted water from river branches have seriously affected shrimp farming households in the commune.

Notably, over 150 hectares of 396 shrimp farming households, belonging to 4 cooperatives, had shrimp die. Meanwhile, the shrimp farming ponds of Mr. Dung and his three sons were still safe and highly effective, only slightly affected by the epidemic.
