Lithium batteries and electronic devices using these batteries must be transported in accordance with regulations to avoid the risk of fire and explosion, which threatens the safety of passengers and flights.
Vietnam Airlines said: According to regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), lithium batteries and electronic devices using this type of battery must be transported properly to avoid the risk of fire and explosion, threatening the safety of passengers and flights.
Specifically, power banks and lithium batteries are generally not accepted for transport in checked baggage. These items are only allowed in carry-on baggage because they can be dangerous during transport.
Passengers should remove lithium batteries from their carry-on baggage and place them in a visible place during the flight. For safety reasons, passengers should not charge lithium batteries from USB ports on board the aircraft and should not use lithium batteries to charge electronic devices.
Passengers may carry lithium batteries and electronic devices using this type of battery with a capacity of less than 100Wh in their carry-on baggage, with a maximum quantity of 20 batteries, including spare batteries and batteries installed in the device.
For lithium batteries with a capacity of 100Wh to 160Wh, passengers need to notify and get approval from the airline before bringing them on board with a maximum of two batteries.
Lithium batteries with a capacity of over 160Wh or damaged or swollen batteries will not be transported by plane in any form.
The power bank should be placed in a visible location during flight.
Vietjet Air, based on Directive No. 1027/CT-CHK dated February 26, 2025 of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam on controlling items containing lithium batteries, informs passengers:
Power banks must be removed from carry-on baggage and placed in a visible location during the flight. Passengers are not allowed to plug in power banks in any way, nor are they allowed to use power banks to charge personal devices during the flight.
Vietjet recommends that passengers fully charge their personal electronic devices before boarding the plane; power banks must be kept in carry-on luggage and cannot be checked.
Recently, there have been many cases of power banks in carry-on luggage causing fires on airplanes. Therefore, some airlines in the region and around the world have banned passengers from using power banks on flights, taking power banks out of checked baggage and placing them in a visible place.
