The Great Cold is the coldest time of year, when temperatures drop to their lowest and the weather becomes very cold.
The Great Cold of 2024 will appear on January 20 (December 10 of the lunar calendar). This solar term will last until around February 3 (December 24 of the lunar calendar). The start of the Great Cold is also the day when the North is predicted to receive a strong cold air mass from the north.
This cold air mass may have snow in the high mountains.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from January 20 to 21, the Northern and North Central regions are likely to experience a severe cold spell, with the lowest temperature in mountainous areas possibly dropping below 9 degrees Celsius, in high mountainous areas it could drop below 2 degrees Celsius, in some places below 0 degrees Celsius, and there may be snow and ice.
At the same time, the Gulf of Tonkin and the northern East Sea (including the waters of the Hoang Sa archipelago) have strong northeast winds of level 6 - level 7, gusting to level 8 - level 9. Then the strong winds tend to spread to the southern sea, causing rough seas.
Temperatures in Hanoi could drop to 9 degrees Celsius during this cold spell.
To proactively respond and minimize damage, the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control requested the Command Committees for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue of the Northern and North Central provinces and cities to closely monitor warning bulletins, forecasts on the development of severe cold and the actual situation in the locality to promptly notify and guide local authorities and people to proactively prevent and avoid.
Provide guidance on ensuring people's health, do not use honeycomb coal stoves for heating in closed rooms to avoid human casualties; direct inspection and review of plans to ensure safety for students at boarding schools.
Strengthen propaganda and guidance for livestock households to strengthen barns, cover and keep warm, store food; prevent and control diseases for livestock, poultry, and aquatic products; guide measures to ensure safety for rice, vegetable, and other crop production. Notify and guide visitors and tourists; warn of the risk of frost and slipperiness to ensure safety for people and vehicles participating in traffic.
Regarding strong winds at sea, it is recommended that the command boards for natural disaster prevention, control and search and rescue of coastal provinces and cities from Quang Ninh to Kien Giang closely monitor warning bulletins, forecasts and developments of strong winds at sea; notify captains and owners of vehicles and vessels operating at sea to proactively prevent and have appropriate production plans, ensuring safety of people and property; maintain communication to promptly handle bad situations that may occur.
