The latest play by the Vietnam Drama Theater is inspired by the heroic sacrifice of three police officers while on firefighting duty. The work, directed by Meritorious Artist Kieu Minh Hieu and written by author Thien An, not only realistically depicts the fierce challenges of the firefighting profession but also deeply depicts the inner lives of people who are constantly facing the line between life and death.
The play revolves around the three main characters Vu Trong Thanh (The Nguyen), Ngo Trung Tuan (Ba Duy) and Hoang Nhat Linh (Vu Tuan) and their fellow fire prevention, firefighting and rescue police (PCCC&CNCH) teammates. Besides the difficult moments of firefighting and rescue, their lives are filled with thoughts and feelings about their jobs and families...
The name of the play also opens up questions for the audience to immerse themselves in and find answers throughout the work: What makes a person willing to rush into a sea of fire, regardless of danger, just to save the lives of others? Are they afraid? Are there moments of weakness? And who will be behind them, waiting, worrying and hoping in every moment of life and death?
Director Kieu Minh Hieu said that the Vietnam Drama Theater chose the theme of Fire Prevention and Rescue based on the unit's functions and tasks of always closely following and reflecting the reality of life; propagating current issues; honoring typical advanced examples, good people, good deeds, especially soldiers who "forget themselves for the country, serve the people".
Staging a play inspired by a true story has advantages but also a lot of pressure for the creative team. Director Kieu Minh Hieu shared that this is both a work honoring the Fire and Rescue Police and a tribute to this brave force, but also wants to contribute to raising fire prevention awareness in the community. To do all of that, the play must first be attractive.
It is not easy to bring tears to the audience with this topic, which is considered dry. However, the crew did an excellent job in the final scene of the play, depicting the sacrifice of three soldiers while on duty. The grief of those who stayed behind was pushed to a climax when mentioning the unfinished promises, but there was no sadness but instead, it fueled the fire of pride and trust because their sacrifice brought peace to the people.
The play is about sacrifices, but the overall tone of the play is not too heavy or gloomy. Director Kieu Minh Hieu and his crew chose many details and stories that are realistic, light-hearted, and humorous in the daily lives of firefighters, creating a sense of closeness with the audience.
“We want to delve deeply into the daily life as well as the difficulties, hardships and fears of each soldier, thereby explaining why firefighters have such noble ideals. It is the daily elements, the depths of the soldier’s heart that create great things,” author Thien An expressed.
Besides the main actors, People's Artist Lam Tung, Meritorious Artist Dung Nam, actors Thanh Huong, Diem Huong, Hong Phuc, Hong Quang, To Dung... each has their own color, all have their own mark and coordinate well to tell a coherent story.
The work received active professional support from the Fire Prevention and Fighting University and local Fire Prevention and Rescue officers, ensuring authenticity. Also because the work required many scenes of fire and smoke, the crew chose descriptive techniques to depict it. The LED screen and smoke effects brought satisfaction to the viewers.
The play “Against the Peaceful Current” will be performed for audiences from April 5th at the Vietnam Drama Theater (1 Trang Tien, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi).
